Cyan

 ADOPTED! September 14, 2016

CyanSHM_outside

CyanSHM_bodyCyan is a 2-3 year old blue/rust Doberman Pinscher. He was running stray and picked up in Coshocton County and taken to a local veterinary clinic for medical attention. He was networked to surrounding shelters and nobody had reported a missing Doberman nor did anyone respond to the posts about him being found. He was extremely skinny, has some visible scarring on his back feet and was clearly neglected. Despite all of that he has a wonderful disposition and is grateful for the care and love he has received since being found.  A nonprofit group, Stop the Suffering, works with rural animal shelters in Ohio to save the lives of cats and dogs and helped network Cyan from the boarding kennel he was staying at and arrange for him to come to Secondhand Mutts.

Cyan’s “caregivers” were all elated that he was able to move on and find a new home but also heartbroken saying goodbye to him when he was loaded up for his transport north. Cyan has now been to our vet for a second health exam, he is heartworm negative and as soon as he’s neutered we will place him in a forever home. Cyan is strong on the leash but with some training he will learn as the breed is eager to learn. He has been cat tested and did quite well. He has not participated in group play yet due to not being altered but we expect he will do well when we slowly start with dog introductions. He did have some opportunities to meet and mingle with other dogs at the boarding kennel he stayed at and there were no reports of aggression toward other dogs.

BEHAVIOR & FOSTER REPORT
Cyan has been in a foster home with two other dogs and does not seem bothered by other dogs in the home. He has all the “velcro” qualities of a Doberman and prefers to be around and with his human companions more than dogs. In his few daycare visits he presents himself with full confidence. He does not like when other dogs run by him quickly or there are burst of high energy. When those moments occur he will “referee” the pack and try to show his alpha personality. Cyan loves to work and will need to continue command training and live with someone who understand a Dobermans need to work or he will get bored and become rambunctious. Cyan has moved to stay in a different, temporary, weekend only foster home as an only dog and is very content living on his own. He is not destructive and he is crate trained despite not liking to be in a crate at first. We believe Cyan would do best in a home with adults only as the chaos of kids playing or running could upset him and we prefer not to set him up for failure. He does have a bad habit of jumping up with excitement and he knibbles on hands but we are working on correcting that behavior. Cyan would benefit from exercise daily in the form of walks or jogging to make sure he is mentally and physically stimulated. We believe he could live with another dog or no dogs at all and be completely happy.

We are providing weekly dog training sessions to his adopter or foster-to-adopter to insure he gets structure and guidance as he has been without a home for sometime and it’s beneficial for his long term prospects to stay focused and work given his breed. Cyan is trained on a pinch collar but also responds well to a slip lead collar. He is very strong but heels nicely on a leash on command with practice.

We are not a traditional shelter, we are a cage-free facility. All dogs are temperament tested and must get along with other dogs to stay here. Appointments must be made in advance to meet our Secondhand Mutts. Please call 216-664-9660 or email rescue@secondhandmutts.org to set up a time. We are closed on Sundays. We prefer to adopt to local families but will consider long distance adoptions.

Adoption Fee $250
