Fundraiser to cover medical expenses for The Extra Mile program

In 2017 we placed 73 dogs. Of those we used funds from The Extra Mile program to help 5 dogs with medical needs and 2 dogs with behavioral issues. Most recently to join our adoption family is a senior dog named Wyatt who was found on the city streets and tested positive for heartworms. He will be undergoing treatment in January 2018. So, please eat up and support our cause.

The Barkfeast History

Scramble

Eight years ago we saved the life of Scramble, a senior Doberman Pinscher who was thrown from a truck and taken to a shelter in Youngstown, Ohio. He was heart worm positive and needed a second chance on life. He found that at Secondhand Mutts when he met his angel and foster dad Bradley Lunder. Scramble spent months receiving medical treatment and was welcomed into Brad’s home until he passed on July 5, 2010. In his honor we celebrate his life and raise money and awareness for other heart worm positive dogs in our program.

Heartworm positive dogs have a lot to go through to be well. Blood tests, x-rays, heartworm treatment, blood tests, x-rays…and all the while they have to maintain little to no excitement in their lives, including exercise and play. It is recommended in many cases where dogs are being treated for heartworm that the dogs be crated for the bulk of all day and all night – for about two months. Too much excitement or exertion can be deadly. The treatment is painful for dogs and many times there can be complications because of the seriousness of these situations.

Every year Secondhand Mutts rescues dogs from a variety of situations. We are never sure what a dogs’ history is (medically or otherwise) when they are accepted into our program but once we accept them, we are totally dedicated to them. We make sure they are spayed or neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, de-wormed and socialized and that they receive their flea, tick and heartworm preventive.

The funds raised at our Pancake Barkfeast allow us to care for dogs we take in who test positive for heartworm. The Pancake Barkfeast is held to raise funds and awareness for the dogs in our program that are heart worm positive. It can cost up to $700 or more per dog to treat them for heart worm. In 2017 we treated 2 dogs that tested positive for heartworm: Garth Algar and Luke. In 2018 new arrival Wyatt will be undergoing treatment later this month.
