Abra

AbraSHM

ADOPTED! JUNE 2, 2014

Mama Abra had 10 puppies who have all been placed since taking them in.  Abra is about 2 years old, she is very playful and loving. She loves all dogs, cats,  and kids. She is playful and would do great in any home. Abra is spayed, up to date on shots and microchipped. We are currently seeking a foster home for Abra. She was adopted in late March and since her adopter took her home his job has changed requiring him to work many more hours. He is about an hour drive from work so the additional time traveling to and from work has made it so Abra is alone almost 12 hours per day. He determined this was not the life she deserved and asked us to take her back and find her a better life. We all love Abra and she’s back in our pack now waiting for a new family to adopt her.

PRIOR FOSTER HOME REPORT:

Abra was brought to the City of Cleveland the week before Christmas along with her 1 week old puppies…10 of them!  Her intake listed her as a stray but we really believe she belonged to someone who neglected to have her spayed and when she delivered the puppies did not want to be bothered with the task of raising them. Her pups are now 12 weeks old and in homes of their own and Abra has completed her mama responsibilities and is ready to meet her new family.

photoShe is sweet and social and loves people although can be a tiny bit unsure when meeting new men. As long as Abra is allowed to take the lead and set her own pace this has not been an issue and she warms up quickly. She was housebroken in no time at all and uses a doggy door to go in and out as she needs to, although she stays in the kitchen with our senior female dog while we are at work and can go 8 hours with no accidents. She is also crate trained, her bed and blanket are in her crate and we leave the door open so she can go in and out as she wants. If she needs to be secured in the crate for any reason she is happy there with a chew toy to occupy the time.

abra2She has met children and loves them and she is respectful of cats so we feel she would be fine in a home with resident kitties as long as there is a supervised introduction. She may chase a cat if she is feeling frisky, but only in play and not as prey. She has not had much training on a leash as she has spent much of her time with us tending to her puppies and the frigid weather has made it difficult to do regular walks outside.

She is eager to please and listens well so teaching her how to walk nicely should not be difficult. She does know “sit”, and most importantly, “no” and will stop whatever she is doing when she is corrected. Abra had her daycare evaluation at the Mutt Hutt a few weeks ago and did fine with other dogs although since she still had mama hormones circulating she was a little too intriguing to a few of the other females so daycare was put on hold until she is spayed, which is happening today. She would be perfect for daycare and socialization groups and exercise will be a must for her as she has turned out to be a 48 lb bundle of activity. An ideal home for Abra would be with someone who is looking for a running buddy or with an active family with kids that she can play with. She would probably do best in a home with a fenced yard but it would not be a necessity as long as she has a positive outlet for her energy. She would do fine as an only dog but probably better with a male with comparable energy level or a female who is fine with other girls.

abra4She is a bit protective with her food and high value treats but only around other dogs and never with humans. She should be permitted to eat in a area where she feels secure and be able to take her special treats into her crate to enjoy them. She was a bit underweight when she came to us and we feel that food was not easy for her to come by but once she realizes that she will always have meals, shelter, and toys this will easily resolve. Abra is a snuggly sweetheart and at around one year old has spent much of her puppyhood raising her family. She is ready to put her responsibilities behind her and just be a carefree dog again. Everyone who meets her falls in love with her personality and most importantly her adorable up-and-down-ears! Please give Abra the chance to experience a fabulous forever family of her own.

We are not a traditional shelter, we are a cage-free facility. All dogs are temperament tested and must get along with other dogs to stay here. Appointments must be made in advance to meet our Secondhand Mutts. Please call 216-664-9660 or email rescue@secondhandmutts.org to set up a time. We are closed on Sundays. We prefer to adopt to local families but will consider long distance adoptions.
