In February 2013 Angel was rescued by Kristen, a Good Samaritan with a big heart, who saw her posted on Craigslist and had to intervene. This beautiful girl was “saved” from the Amish by a “dog flipper”. She realized she was unable to sell her due to medical issues, so she posted her on Craigslist asking for $75. Kristen was able to convince the “flipper” to surrender her over to her.  She immediately took her to her veterinarian, Dr. L’Amoreaux, at West Main Vet Clinic on March 1st for x-rays which confirmed she is bilaterally hip dysplast.

Angel is a sweet, 1.5 year old Boxer/Bull Dog female who had a very rough life previous to her coming into Kristens life. Angel’s original history dates back to her being born at an Amish puppy mill, she and was kept in a cage so small that she wasn’t able to get up, move around or walk. When she was originally adopted/rescued it was obvious to her owner hat she needed immediate medical attention to her hind legs but she could not afford the care needed. Kristen, an animal advocate and activist, stepped in and knew where there was a will there was a way.  Kristen began fundraising, getting expert veterinary opinions and got her the medical attention she so badly needed. Kristen now needs our help finding Angel a forever home.

AngelSHM_bodyAngel was likely never socialized, just kept in a cage to grow, but the size of the cage didn’t grow with her. She has done extremely well in her foster home given her previous life. Kristen has been fostering her in a home with 2 very active children, another dog and 3 cats. Angel does well with all, though at times can be a bit bossy with her doggy foster brother, which may very well be associated with the pain she has been in. This hasn’t cause any issues in the home but Angel would do best in a home without a dominant type of dog as a companion. Plenty of children regularly come through the house and though she is shy and timid with strangers, she is always friendly.

AngelSHM_leftlegOn April 12, 2013 Angel was checked by the specialists at Akron Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center who determined she didn’t have any obvious neurologic dysfunction. The technician convinced Kristen it was a good idea to bring her in to get a second opinion. Upon examination, Dr. Ferguson thought it was best to take additional x-rays to see all of her vertebrae to ensure there weren’t any infections or other obvious signs of damage. She indeed had some middle vertebrae that are spaced closer together, but he said this was common in English bulldog mixes. His recommendation is FHO’s on both femurs/hips and physical therapy.

AngelSHM_rightlegOn April 25, 2013 Angel had the surgery she needed to have her hips fixed, and has had the heads of her femurs removed, so that her femur and hip joint are no longer rubbing or painful. Her surgery cost Kristen and her family $1900, another $700 for the specialist appointments leading up to the surgery. Big thanks to Rascal Unit and Spay Neuter Ohio for taking her under their wing for her spay surgery on April 6, 2013.

AngelSHM_waterThroughout the summer Angel’s foster family had been doing aqua-therapy at Healing Waters with her to re-gain muscle mass in her back legs, and she is now able to hop around the house. Each 15-minute session is $30, or a discount to $52 for a half hour session. Since swimming, which has stopped due to a lack of funds, multiple times she’s taken a few steps, and it’s only a matter of time before she starts walking like a normal dog. Because of her lack of muscle, she’s still unable to go up or down stairs. She is also not housebroken at the moment, but is used to puppy pads. While her fosters are out of the house she stays in a room baby gated with a puppy pad.

AngelSHM_postop_bodyAngel’s idea home would be one who can pick up with her therapy where her fosters will be leaving off; aqua therapy and/or swimming are the best exercises for her since they are non-impact and non-weightbearing. A fenced yard would be a plus so she would never need to contend with a tie out or cable run as she gains strength and becomes better with her walking. A home with children and cats would be fine for her, as well as non-dominant dogs, and ones that would not try to play too rough with her while she is being rehabbed. Angel is a very special girl who needs a loving, dedicated family that will see her through to realize her full potential in life. She will reward that family with great love and devotion. Angel hopes to hear from you if you are someone who can help her achieve these goals.

We are fundraising to help Angel continue to get the water therapy she needs. We will be setting up a special account in her name and restricting funds for her foster and/or forever family to use for her aqua therapy sessions. Please consider giving a donation.

fosterhomeAngel is up to date on shots, she is spayed but Angel needs a forever home. In the meantime we are looking for someone to foster her through her recovery and help her achieve the dreams of having an active lifestyle. If you think you have the right home for her, the time and patience for a special needs dog on the road to a normal life please email rescue@secondhandmutts.org. Angel is not a candidate to come to daycare or board at our facility. We are looking for a committed foster home where she can stay until she finds her forever family. She is good with kids, cats and dogs who don’t bother her (submissive or low-key are the best type).

AngelSHM_lifejacketAngel will be placed with a life jacket (for swimming), a sling for assisting her on walks, and a wheelchair we are hopeful she can donate to another dog down the road.
