Baxter

 ADOPTED! May 9, 2014

BaxterSHM_bodyBaxter is a 3 to 4 years old Jack Russell Terrier / Dachshund Mix. He is about 30 pounds. He loves kids and other dogs, he has not been cat tested but this can be arranged for interested applicants. Baxter enjoys receiving lots of attention, loves to run and play, and never leaves your side. Does fairly well on a leash and he is house broken. He would probably do best in an active home with other dogs or kids or a fenced yard where he could run and play. Baxter is up to date on shots, he will be neutered prior to his adoption. If you’d like to meet Baxter please email rescue@secondhandmutts.org

FORMER RESCUE FOSTER REPORT:

To the Rescuers/Fosters or Adopters of Baxter,

Thank you so much, from the bottom of our hearts, for taking Baxter.  He is much loved and has fit in nicely with our family.  He is a sweet, gentle boy.  He loves sleeping at the foot of the bed or at least in the room with his people.  When he can’t see you he whines and cries, including whenever you leave the house.  He loves lying at your feet or next to you at all times.

Baxter can be silly too.  He has the cutest howl and he loves growling while playing tug of war with our dogs.  It’s all in good fun!  He really enjoys chewing raw hides and bones and likes stuffed animals and balls.  He is great with all other dogs and kids (not sure of kids under 6 or cats, he’s never been tested).

When we first got him I slept on the couch so he could see me because we didn’t want him on the bed.  After 5 or 6 days he finally stopped whining all the time and stayed downstairs with our dogs.  He has had a few incidents of peeing in the house; not sure why because he seems to be able to hold it all night.  He has been seen running around the Kenmore area for over a year so we know he likes to run and may have been an outdoor dog (hence, the peeing in the house).  Baxter loves running in our big fenced in yard but he did snoop around and try to slip under one little spot where the fence didn’t quite touch the ground, so all holes need covered.  He likes going outside a LOT to snoop and run, so a fenced yard would be great.

The biggest concern about him is that he’s smart and quick!  He WILL slip out a slightly opened door every chance he gets.  We always have to push him back when opening the door. He got out twice, once while coming in and the other while going out the door.  We yelled loudly and told him to stop.  He didn’t go too far and did eventually let us grab him.  Maybe tethering him when someone comes to visit would be best until he learns to stay in his own yard.   Hopefully neutering will also keep him from running.  He does fairly well walking on a leash.

There were a couple days he decided not to eat and he seemed “down”; moped around and whined all day. He’s picky about food and treats.  He only likes the soft treats and we’ve been giving some dry food with a little bit of wet on it twice a day.  The vet said he’s around 3 years old and about 32 pounds.  His shot records are in the bag, along with his other favorite toys and treats (he doesn’t mind sharing! ; ) )

Our biggest dream for Baxter is to find a loving home with people who have children or another dog to play with, and a fenced yard.  I know, it may be too much to ask but that’s our dream for him and what he’s been used to the past 2 weeks.  Thanks again for taking him from a life on the street and finding him a wonderful furever home!!  We will miss the little guy!

We are not a traditional shelter, we are a cage-free facility. All dogs are temperament tested and must get along with other dogs to stay here. Appointments must be made in advance to meet our Secondhand Mutts. Please call 216-664-9660 or email rescue@secondhandmutts.org to set up a time. We are closed on Sundays. We prefer to adopt to local families but will consider long distance adoptions.
