Binker

ADOPTED! September 9, 2014

BinkerSHM_body2Binker is just under a year old. He was originally adopted from the Cleveland Animal Protective League and then surrendered to our organization after the owners unsuccessfully tried to find him a home themselves. He is crate trained, house trained, good with kids and a healthy, active pup. Binker loves to go on walks, play fetch and receive lots of love. Binker loves to work and will require a fair amount of exercise so if you are considering a dog for an active lifestyle this is the dog for you! Binker is living in a foster home where he is getting structure, walks and exposure to children. He is around 60 pounds. He is a Border Collie/Labrador mix.

Do you love to run?  Do you love to go the beach?  If you love to be outdoors then Binks is your DOGMATE!  Binks is a pleaser and really loves to run and swim.  He gets along great with other dogs and barely ever barks.  Binks is 10 months old and still has some puppy playing tendencies.  If he has not been exercised he can becoming a little spazzy and want to play like you are a fellow dog. Binks respects the boundaries you set and knows which furniture he can sit on and which he should stay off of.  Binks is used to being crated. He is crated during the day and also sleeps in his crate. The only time Binks whined and had a hard time in the crate was the first night in our home.  Poor guy was scared.  Anytime after that, he reluctantly goes into his crate and then looks at you with sad eyes that make you feel so guilty.  Binks knows how to pull at your heart strings.

Currently, we are leash training him.  At first it was a struggle. He pulled every which way but where you wanted to go. He gets excited anytime he sees another dog or cat. I dreaded walking him because I spent more time tugging and redirecting him.  However, ever since we bought a harness I LOVE taking him for walks.  He walks right beside you and barely ever pulls now.  We are now trying to train him to sit anytime we stop walking.  We are also trying to train him to fetch. He really hasn’t gotten the hang of that yet.

Binks would benefit most if he had a family that could regularly exercise him.  A fenced in backyard would be best for him–he loves to be free and run around.  We have taken him to parks and have let him off his leash and he always stays close by and returns when you call him.  He gets along well with children but sometimes can get excited (especially after spending 8 hours in a crate) and jump up and play nip at the kids.  He has never shown aggression unless you count the time he barked and growled at our Santa statue in the basement.  Binks did not like the looks of Santa.  We had to put Santa in the closet.

Oh, and I saved the best news for last–he is potty trained.  We had one accident with him and it was the kids’ fault.  They were both ignoring him and he was whining at the door to get out and he just couldn’t take it anymore.  So he peed on the floor.  Other than that, he is really good at holding it in but if you crate him–take him out right away.  He can only hold it in for so long.

Overall Binks is a well-behaved dog that loves to play and give kisses.  He would be an awesome addition to your family.

We are not a traditional shelter, we are a cage-free facility. All dogs are temperament tested and must get along with other dogs to stay here. Appointments must be made in advance to meet our Secondhand Mutts. Please call 216-664-9660 or email rescue@secondhandmutts.org to set up a time. We are closed on Sundays. We prefer to adopt to local families but will consider long distance adoptions.
