Layla

ADOPTED! August 22, 2018

Lalya was adopted in October 2016 and due to unfortunate circumstances she was returned to us. Her owners very much loved her and the wife of the couple who adopted her contacted us after the unexpected and devastating loss of her husband. We hope to find Layla a home where she can continue to get all the love and activity she had with her former family. Carolina is up to date on shots and spayed. She is good with kids. She is really good with all people. When I would take her to the dog park to play she liked to hang around humans instead of the dogs

FORMER HOME REPORT FROM HER MOM:

Layla is approximately 40 lbs.  She loved exploring the outdoors of our cabin, boating, and riding in our open jeep.  She loves going on walks. She is very good at the dog parks but she needs to know where I am at all times. She is a great dog for a family and although she gets along with other dogs I think she prefers being the only dog.  She is very smart and learns quickly.   She knows sit, stay, wait, paw, down, and finish. We have worked on roll over.  She is asked to  sit and stay for her feeding and knows to get get it with the command OK. I was working on her walking when my husband got sick. She knows side means she is to walk on my left.  I use a harness on her.  She will tend to pull with a collar leash.  I am sure with some time and patience she will be good at walking. She does have an instinct to hunt and will go after mice, squirrels, chipmunks and rabbits.  She used to bark at anything that went by the window but I have worked with her on a vibrating collar to correct this. She knows not to bark and is getting really good at controlling this. I feed her 1 cup of good twice a day and she is used to getting treats, pigs ears, and some occasional human food.  If food is left on the counter she will probably take it.   Although very affection Layla also enjoys her own space. Her ideal home would have plenty of outdoor space to run and a family to give her love and attention. She loves attention.  She has been taught not to get on furniture but she does hop on my bed frequently. She is very lovable and will be a great addition to any family.

Her original bio posted September 2016:
Carolina (now Layla) is a 4-5 year old medium size mix breed that resembles a Doberman or a Hound dog. She is 40# and fully grown. She was pulled from a shelter in Springfield, Missouri after she ended up on a euthanasia list with 18 other dogs. A partner rescue we work with arranged to add her to their transport so that her life could be spared and she could become part of the Secondhand Mutts family.

Carolina (now Layla) spent a night in a foster home awaiting her trip east and she did remarkably well with dogs, people and kids that were in the home. She has transitioned well into our social daycare setting. Carolina is a great dog for a family seeking a medium sized, short-haired dog. We do not know her back story of how she ended up in the shelter in Missouri and frankly she’s off to new beginnings and we put dogs pasts behind them when they arrive.

We are not a traditional shelter, we are a cage-free facility. All dogs are temperament tested and must get along with other dogs to stay here. Appointments must be made in advance to meet our Secondhand Mutts. Please call 216-664-9660 or email rescue@secondhandmutts.org to set up a time. We are closed on Sundays. We prefer to adopt to local families but will consider long distance adoptions.
