DustPanSHM_bodyDust Pan was dropped off at the Humane Society of Crawford County at the beginning of the year. He was left in an outdoor pen overnight. Luckily he was found the next day by the shelter staff – he was roaming in the parking lot after finding his way out of the pen. The shelter took him in and listed him on their Facebook page in hopes of finding him a home. We have pulled dogs form this humane society and we were glad to step in and assist with making sure Dust Pan could find a way to a forever home through our Secondhand Snouts program.

Dust Pan arrived with skin mange (common for pigs) and has been treated for it. His skin was very raw and itchy. He has moved to a foster home where he is learning crate training, house training and getting his skin oiled and bag balmed daily. We have seen much improvement in a few short days since he took his oral medicine for mange. Dust Pan is living in a home with a Boston Terrier, a Bassett Hound mix, a very large American Bull Dog and a cat. He is also living with a 200+ pound potbellied pig foster brother. We are 100% sure Dust Pan is getting socialized with other animals.

Dust Pan has learned to walk up and down steps. He is comfortable wearing  a sweater and being held. He is learning how to wear a harness and walk on a leash. These are all very important things to start with a pig when they are young. He is a very friendly pig, he is learning his name and he will come when he is called. He takes food gently. We prefer to find him a home with a fenced in yard where he can be contained and graze.

Dust Pan has visited the vet and had his first check up. It is very difficult to gauge a pigs age or how large they will become. We estimate he is between 6-8 months old. He is getting neutered and will be up to date on shots prior to his adoption.

Please know that not all dogs get along with pigs and we will be very selective about the home he transitions to – just because he’s been socialized with dogs does not mean all dogs are socialized to live with a pig. Dogs with prey drive are not going to work with a household pig due to noises pigs make and the reaction dogs with prey drive have. We are more than happy to conduct a meet and greet with any approved applicant.

Please research your city laws and local animal ordinances before applying to own a pig. If you are unsure where to find this information we can help you find it or you can call your city zoning department for information. Pigs can grow to be 50-150 pounds over a 3-4 year growing period. They need a good diet of fresh vegetables and fruit as well as pig feed which is available at most feed and seed stores. Pigs are social animals that like having things to do to keep busy and not be destructive. If you do not have time to give your pig your time a pig is not the animal for you.
