FOSTER CARE REPORT
Gomez is a very happy, loves-life dog. He has lots of energy that we burn off running in the backyard, dog park, and around the neighborhood. When it’s time to sleep, he is very interested in cuddling and will try to make a spot for himself on the couch or bed (or a lap). His house training is good — he can hold it for a long time, no crate necessary — and we are working on going on command for when it’s time to leave the house. He is always left out in the house and hasn’t chewed anything, but he has been known to make off with a couple dropped pieces of laundry and an old pair of Uggs. For both energy burning and his entertainment, he’s been having fun with a Kong treats toy, but he is extra hard on traditional dog toys, i.e., v. good at gutting out the stuffing. He loves other dogs and will often move in for a neck grab while playing which looks scarier than it is — just worth mentioning since I know him to do it out of fun but it could be misinterpreted if you don’t understand dog behavior.
He is reticent to hop in the car unless someone shows him how to hop in first, but once in he sits patiently and only barks at passersby…and he does bark at strangers pretty consistently — first-time visitors to the house, on walks, etc. Visitors get to be A-OK w/ him really fast, especially if they let him sniff their hand and pet him, but we’re still working on please-don’t-bark-at-everyone- we-walk-past when around the neighborhood. He knows “sit,” is pretty good at “stay,” and is learning “lay down.”
We are not a traditional shelter, we are a cage-free facility. All dogs are temperament tested and must get along with other dogs to stay here. Appointments must be made in advance to meet our Secondhand Mutts. Please call 216-664-9660 or email rescue@secondhandmutts.org to set up a time. We are closed on Sundays. We prefer to adopt to local families but will consider long distance adoptions.
