Gunner

ADOPTED! August 29, 2017

Gunner is a Shepherd/Rottweiler mix and he is under 2 years of age. He was adopted by his former family and was given up due to hard times earlier this year and then we placed him in March 2017.  We were contacted after a few months in the new home with an update that there is a job change and Gunner is not getting the time and attention he needs and is now seeking a third home. We are homing “third time is the charm” in his case.

Gunner is well socialized with dogs and would be an excellent member of any family who adopts him. He is very playful and loves toys. He is currently in a foster home until he is placed. Gunner is a candidate for continued obedience training wherever he goes and we are happy to help offset the cost of his training with one of our recommended dog trainers for applicants who are serious about adopting him.

FOSTER CARE REPORT

Gunner is a wonderful guy; very sweet and loving, and quite the mischievous goofball. 

Smart and very social toward people as well as other animals, also very strong and excitable. He is house-broken and crate trained. Gunner is VERY HIGH ENERGY: he loves the dog park, he has never met another dog he doesn’t like, his enthusiasm for meeting other dogs can be quite astounding. If allowed, Gunner would happily spend his entire day playing and rough-housing with every dog at the park. During short periods of down time, Gunner’s enjoys his chew toys or a Kong filled with peanut butter. At bedtime, he likes to be near his people, he usually sleeps with myself or one of my daughters. 

Gunner is still learning basic obedience: Because he just loves everyone, people as well as animals, he is always very excited about meeting and greeting them. But, he is very strong, and often forgets himself in his excitement. He knows basic commands and walks well on a leash, until he sees another dog while on a leash, then his enthusiasm quickly takes over and he can be quite difficult to control. Continued basic obedience training is an absolute must for Gunner. 

Not only is Gunner strong and energetic, he is also quite intelligent and he gets bored quickly. When he is left alone outdoors for more than a few minutes, his boredom can lead him into mischief. He would do best supervised or having a playmate (dog or person) rather than be left outside to his own devises. 

Gunner’s idea of the perfect family is one that has lots and of time and energy for him, and he would absolutely LOVE another dog in the family. Gunner does not tire easily, he needs lots of daily physical exercise, he would make an AWESOME running partner. Due to his strength and exuberance, a family without young children would probably be best.  Children 10+ recommended. 

Medical: Gunner is fully vaccinated and receives monthly heart worm and flea preventatives, Gunner has mild skin allergies that have been well controlled with a grain-free diet and a fish oil supplement, with occasional Benadryl for flare-ups in the spring and fall.
