Foster  Home Report:

Hans has a very tender disposition. He is affectionate, intelligent, and loves to play with other dogs, especially my one year old Mastiff Mix: Buddy. Hans enjoys snuggling with my children (ages 10 and 12). Hans has also begun to play at with other dogs at doggy day care.

He does not seem to have a high prey drive as he is very disinterested in the many squirrels, birds, and chipmunks in my yard.

Hans was very fearful when we first met him. He urinated upon meeting me. It took a couple of days for him to feel comfortable with us and begin to trust.  We initially kept the noise level in our home very low, as loud noises would scare him. Little by little he has gotten used to regular household noises, including the vacuum.

Hans is still fearful of being crated. He has gotten as far as putting one paw into the crate but then he backs out. He has done well in our laundry room with the door shut when we have to leave the house. Hans has not had any accidents in my home with the exception of an occasional excited tinkle in the morning. We have not given him the run of our house. We have gated off a large portion of our kitchen for him to hang out when we are home. We also have a large enclosed deck where he and our dog run and play.

We have taken Hans to a youth baseball game. He was fearful of people directly approaching him but he approached people on his own who did NOT make eye contact or approach him. With Hans, it’s all about building trust. Once his trust is earned, he will reciprocate with love and loyalty.

Hans will do best with a family who will be patient with him and will take a gentle approach. He has a lot of love and loyalty to give in return. What most impressed me about Hans was how quiet he has been at night. He sleeps curled up in his bed and doesn’t make sound. It has been very rewarding to see him come out of shell and learn to trust and love again.

We are not a traditional shelter, we are a cage-free facility. All dogs are temperament tested and must get along with other dogs to stay here. Appointments must be made in advance to meet our Secondhand Mutts. Please call 216-664-9660 or email rescue@secondhandmutts.org to set up a time. We are closed on Sundays. We prefer to adopt to local families but will consider long distance adoptions.
