Hazel is a two year old boxer mix female. She is taller than your average boxer and could have some Great Dane lineage in her breed (but who knows). Hazel was taken to a local veterinary clinic for a possible obstruction in her abdomen. The owners could not afford the care to have her seen and opted to surrender her to the clinic. After some testing was done it was confirmed she did not have an obstruction and she did not need to have surgery. Hazel has been around kids and she has been a good guest at the clinic where she is currently staying in a kennel environment. She has had some much needed social days at The Mutt Hutt to release her energy and give us the opportunity to get to know her while we try to find her a home.

Hazel will need some work with commands but she is very eager to learn and responsive to training. She falls into the “high energy” category and will need an owner who can dedicate time for exercise including walks, runs or continued daycare or dog park visits.

Hazel has been spayed since being surrendered and she is now ready to find her forever family. Email us if you would like to meet Hazel.

FOSTER HOME REPORT:

Since Tuesday hazel has had a week full of playtime and just being a puppy.
Hazel_fosterShe has thoroughly enjoyed the outside and the freedom of playing and having a play mate. The first night she was very energetic and did many laps both inside and outside the house. I do not allowed dogs in my office or guest room and she learned quickly they were off limit just by saying no.   She is very very smart.  It was mentioned to me about her jumping and mouthing and that is one thing we have begun to work on.   I noticed right away that when she wanted attention she would jump on me and than mouth my hand or arm if jumping was not successful.  I started getting her to sit and than pet her and love on her.  By today you could see she was already starting to think before jumping up or mouthing me.
Her and her foster sister Zoey have gotten over their squeaky toy issues from earlier in the week and they are allowed to play with them again and boy does she like squeaky toys.  The girls take turns kissing each others faces and than taking the toy with out the other knowing it.  Their inside playing is a good play with very little time outs due to getting too rough.   Outside has to be monitored a lot.  Hazel likes to start at one end of the yard and run to the other side and dive bomb Zoey which causes friction.   I have Zoey on her e collar to try to warn her in time and she starts to run towards me if she sees hazel coming for me to head off the collision.   This will come with time and it will get better.  If Hazel is really high energy they go out separately – with objection because they want the other with them.
One thing Hazel has picked up on quickly is being calm when exiting her crate she sits and waits for the door to open.  Also she is sitting and waiting patiently for her food bowl to go down and not jumping on me while trying to put it down.
It was mentioned that she was currently eating 3-4 times per day with 1 cup each feeding and that I could increase if I wanted to.  I am currently feeding 2-2.5 cups twice a day in the morning and at night. Sometimes she eats a little checks where me and Zoey are and than back to eating.
Overall she is doing very well.
