Homer

HomerSHM_bodyADOPTED! May 5, 2015

Homer is a chocolate Labrador Retriever mix. He is estimated to be under two years old. He was picked up as a stray in Fayette County, Ohio, and transported to a Cleveland area rescue but refused at the shelter because he was growling in his transport kennel. The transporter contacted us in a panic with no plan for him to go somewhere and asked if The Mutt Hutt could board him until it could be resolved. Luckily, it was a Monday and The Mutt Hutt had a quarantine cage available so he arrived at our door a short time later. Home did exhibit the same growling behavior in the car kennel but after carefully removing him with caution and patience we got him safely in. It was very clear to us Homer was under stress from the many changes of being stray, moving to a county kennel, going in a car and being transported with other dogs barking in close proximity for the 2.5 hour drive north. We were glad to give him a place to chill out and rest.

Homer is a great dog, he knows basic commands and has a friendly personality. He has a lot of love to give and will make a great family pet. He is very strong on the leash and will need some leash training. We also would recommend he finds a home with a fenced yard due to his stray history but we are not going to discard applicants who may not have a fence. He is young and will need excersice and continued obedience training. We have put Homer in a large kennel and he has not shown any issues. He is house trained. We were able to neuter him two days after his arrival so he will not be able to socialize with other dogs on the daycare floor until next week. We will keep you posted on how he does!

We are not a traditional shelter, we are a cage-free facility. All dogs are temperament tested and must get along with other dogs to stay here. Appointments must be made in advance to meet our Secondhand Mutts. Please call 216-664-9660 or email rescue@secondhandmutts.org to set up a time. We prefer to adopt to local families but will consider long distance adoptions.
