Li’l Pacino

ADOPTED! September 2, 2014

PacinoSHMLi’l Pacino is a 1-2 y ear old Miniature Pinscher mix we pulled from a West Virginia shelter. He was there for awhile being passed up most likely because of an unknown diagnosed skin condition. This guy has pizzazz and lots of love to give to the lucky person who chooses to adopt him and watch him transform. He was recently placed in a foster home with two other dogs and one cat and he’s doing quite well. He will require weekly medicated baths. Once we see some improvement on his skin we will get him neutered. He is available to adopt prior to being neutered as we will cover that expense and all expenses related to his skin treatments.

Li’l Pacino has been diagnosed by Dr. Liz at Gateway Animal Clinic as having Demodectic Mange. He has bald spots over his entire body but we are confident with treatment we can get him all fixed up and ready for a home. Thanks to generous supporters and donations we are able to take in the not so appealing dogs from rural shelters that are passed up on or euthanized.

The estimated cost to treat Li’l Pacino is $70/month and those will be covered by Secondhand Mutts until he reaches a point where we and Dr. Liz believes his new owner will take on responsibility for his care. His treatments will take about 6 months (maybe longer). We would like to raise $400 to help cost of treating his mange.  If you are able to donate you can do so by calling 216-664-9660 to charge by phone, or send a check with “Li’l Pacino in the memo line, or you can donate online by clicking on the donate graphic to the left.

Foster Home Report
This is a one-day report, as time goes by we will update his report with new news:

He is a total lap dog. He spent all of last night and this morning in my lap. He shivers a lot…not sure if he is cold or it is from anxiety. The Thundershirt I have is way too big on him, so I just held him really tight. He didn’t have any accidents in the house, but I know he has the potential for it.

He took his bath like a champ. We hung out in the bathroom for 20 minutes (per Emily’s instruction via text) while his skin soaked up the shampoo. I rinsed him off in the tub using the shower. He didn’t love it, but I didn’t come away with any scratches. I swaddled him up in a robe and held him like a baby. He ended up falling asleep. An adopting family should have no difficulty giving him these baths, and if they do, they are not suitable to raise any living creature.

PacinoSHM_bodyHe HATES being crated. Bloody murder screaming for an hour before I gave in and let him into the bed with me. My roommate was getting frustrated that he wouldn’t shut up. He held his potty all night–I had him tucked away like a football to make sure if he moved I would notice. I carried him outside this morning to go potty because I didn’t want him to have an accident the moment he stepped on the floor. He didn’t even make it to the backyard once I set him down; he went right near the door. He will do best in a home that has time to cuddle. He likes to play in the yard. Doesn’t mind the large dogs.

Cat tested and approved. Went nose to nose with Max and didn’t bark or chase. I will continue to send updates. He is in a crate today so I will know more about his potty training skills.

We are not a traditional shelter, we are a cage-free facility. All dogs are temperament tested and must get along with other dogs to stay here. Appointments must be made in advance to meet our Secondhand Mutts. Please call 216-664-9660 or email rescue@secondhandmutts.org to set up a time. We prefer to adopt to local families but will consider long distance adoptions.
