ExtraMile_logo_squareWe are going The Extra Mile for Ophelia.

Ophelia is a 6-8 year old, female, medium sized, docile Labrador Retriever mix. She was picked up as a stray in Fayette County Ohio and taken to the shelter. She is a middle aged dog and given her age and color (black dogs are the least likely to get adopted) we took her in sight unseen (along with Gomez another black dog). Ophelia has the sweetest disposition and can put a smile on anyone’s face who meets here. She is kids, cat and dog friendly. She is mellow to the core. She is afraid to climb steps and her foster mom is working on teaching her how to do so but this will come with time and patience.

Ophelia arrived not spayed and we discovered she had a tumor on her belly. She is now up to date on shots, spayed and her tumor has been removed. We did receive the results of her tumor test and it was a cancerous cell tumor. The tumor has been removed and our vet has reported this so that applicants can fully understand her health condition before applying:

Dr Liz let us know the biopsy came back and indeed it was cancerous. She said the tumor was completely removed and potential adopters need to know that because she has had one cancerous tumor she may be subject to more and that this type of cancer can metastasize to the lungs and can cause breathing problems. She said there’s not much to do outside of the new parents regularly checking her mammary area for hard, firm lumps and to have those addressed when/if they pop up. She also said it’s a total crap-shoot, these either are a total mess for people and cause ongoing problems or nothing happens again but there’s no way to tell.

Ophelia would like to live out a normal life with someone who can take care of her and see too it that she receives the medical care she needs if and when the time comes. There are never any guarantees in life and we can’t predict Ophelia’s health future but we can predict she will make someone very happy if she’s given the chance. If you are interested in adopting Ophelia please fill out our online adoption application and we will contact you to set up an in person meet and greet.

FOSTER CARE REPORT
Ophelia is a 6-8 year old black lab mix who weighs 42 pounds. She is a very sweet girl, mellow and low key. She is house trained, leash trained, and rides nicely in the car. She’s good with other dogs and likes to play a little; not sure about cats. Mostly, she just likes to hang out, get petted, and take naps. She’s affectionate, friendly, and calm. She barks on occasion but not a lot. She is fearful of climbing stairs but will do two or three. She also seems to get afraid and will pull back if she’s not sure where she’s going–like from the house to the car. Once she adjusts to her new home, that will probably not be an issue anymore. I have not crated her but rather confined her to the kitchen when I’m not home. No problems at all. Today I left her unconfined for a few hours–again, no problems. She’s a low maintenance kind of girl. Ophelia is a really wonderful dog who would be a great companion for someone with a more quiet lifestyle.

We are not a traditional shelter, we are a cage-free facility. All dogs are temperament tested and must get along with other dogs to stay here. Appointments must be made in advance to meet our Secondhand Mutts. Please call 216-664-9660 or email rescue@secondhandmutts.org to set up a time. We are closed on Sundays. We prefer to adopt to local families but will consider long distance adoptions.
