Oscar

 ADOPTED! April 25, 2014

OscarSHM

Oscar was picked up as a stray in rural West Virginia, taken to the county shelter and was never claimed. He was found in a garbage can rummaging for food. Many of the dogs in rural shelters are euthanized due to space and lack of time and resources to keep them sheltered. We have a network of friends in the area that alert us to dogs in need and do our part to spare their lives by bringing them into our program here in Cleveland. Oscar is only 20 pounds, he’s about 6 months old and we don’t expect him to get too much bigger. He’ll be a medium sized dog when he’s fully grown at about 30 pounds. He looks like a “honey I shrunk the Labrador Retriever” character and we just love him. Oscar was a little scared when he arrived but thanks to our wonderful staff he was gentle introduced to our pack on a sunny Sunday afternoon and now he’s one of the gang.

Oscar is up to date on shots, he will be neutered before he is adopted. We think he’d be a great family pet!

Foster Home Report:

He plays wonderful with my dog Toskey, both dogs submitting and play bowing. He hasn’t had one accident indoors…yay! He isn’t great about getting in and out of a car, same with the leash, but all in due time would be fine. He takes cues quite well already, responding to ‘no’ and ‘sit’ especially for his food & treats. As for food, he tends to pick at his breakfast because he is so excited to play…his dinner gets gobbled up. When Toskey is too tired to play, Oscar pulls almost every toy out of the bin and amuses himself…it’s soooo cute!! As for cat testing, he came nose to nose with one cat cautiously, which this cat has never allowed before! He has also caught sight of them and chased them upstairs, wondering where they went. No initial strong prey drive, just curiosity! He sleeps through the night, has taken quite well to the crate I have, willingly going in and out even when it’s not bedtime. I haven’t had him sleep with me yet. He has a lot of manners to learn but all in all will make a great puppy to teach and make someone happy!!

We are not a traditional shelter, we are a cage-free facility. All dogs are temperament tested and must get along with other dogs to stay here. Appointments must be made in advance to meet our Secondhand Mutts. Please call 216-664-9660 or email rescue@secondhandmutts.org to set up a time. We are closed on Sundays. We prefer to adopt to local families but will consider long distance adoptions.
