Thom and Yorke are back looking for a new home. It’s not their fault but their owner is too busy with a new job and can no longer care for them. They will be arriving this week, move to a foster home and we will provide updated information about them since their adoption last February. We have seen them a few times for boarding since they were adopted and they have come a long way.

Thom and Yorke do not need to be placed in the same home together. They have been living in a foster home with multiple dogs and are not bonded as they once were. We feel they would actually do best apart from one another due to history together so they can start new lives with a new beginning. Thom is more outgoing than Yorke and less fearful. We would not recommend the dogs for homes with young children due to their history in a hoarding house and being scared of people. These dogs are not aggressive, they are fearful and will need an owner who is calm yet assertive and understands the important of patience and peace. Yorke is a small, apartment size dog that loves to play with the big dogs!

ORIGINAL STORY – 2015:
Thom and Yorke are small terrier mixes. They were on a transport to another shelter a week ago and turned away because they were shut down, growling and were not going to be a match at a caged kennel environment. We were called and on the spot agreed to take them in knowing there may not be many other options. Luckily, dogs like Thom and Yorke excel in a cage-free environment being exposed to people and dogs. We allowed the boys to decompress for a few days before introducing them to dogs. We carefully worked with just a few select handlers getting them comfortable to trust us. After a few days they moved to the daycare floor and have been enjoying socializing.

Thom and Yorke were found in a basement at a home in southern Ohio. They were scheduled to move to a high-kill shelter but volunteers intercepted and arranged for them to move north to a no-kill shelter. We suspect the pair were raised in the basement and will need time and patience for anyone who adopts one or both. We would love if someone would adopt the pair but are open to splitting them up as they are young and resiliant. Thom is coming along a bit faster than Yorke with trust.

They will be moving to a foster home this week and we will have a full report on their home behaviors coming soon. They are up to date on shots, microchipped, groomed and scheduled to be neutered prior to their adoption.

FORMER Foster Home Report (2015)

These two are very sweet, loving dogs who will just need some more time and patience but will beyond a doubt soon become wonderful companions for anyone! They’ve come SO far in just three days of having the home with me and have been super easy. They’re still nervous around new people but this is getting better each day. It really only took them a few hours to warm up to me once I got them home. Both are learning very quickly how to walk well on a leash and are getting more and more confident outside with each day. Thom is certainly the more confident and silly of the two. He’s much more likely to engage in play and bounces around like a goofball when he’s excited. Yorke, on the other hand, is a tad bit more reserved but with some more time and patience will easily be as confident as his brother. Once, however Yorke, does warm up to you he is the biggest “snuggler” of any dog I’ve ever met! He’s particularly found of napping right under your chin if you let him! The only behavioral issue that I’ve noticed so far is that Yorke becomes a bit possessive of toys particularly around his brother. This has only happened once or twice and could easily be due to stress. My guess is the more confident and relaxed Yorke gets, the second that issue will disappear. They’re both doing great with crate training and have both already learned how to sit! They’re both food motivated and easy to train.

We are not a traditional shelter, we are a cage-free facility. All dogs are temperament tested and must get along with other dogs to stay here. Appointments must be made in advance to meet our Secondhand Mutts. Please call 216-664-9660 or email rescue@secondhandmutts.org to set up a time. We are closed on Sundays. We prefer to adopt to local families but will consider long distance adoptions.
