Four years ago we introduced a new twist and we have several local chefs who will be serving custom made omelettes from 9:30 to 11:30 am. There will be plenty of fresh ingredients to order a yummy omelette to your liking. We will be serving buttermilk and chocolate chip pancakes, breakfast potatoes, sausage, bacon, turkey bacon, vegetarian sausage, and orange juice. Fresh brewed coffee compliments of Rising Star Coffee Roasters. Plus, enjoy the Champagne Mimosa Bar (drink tickets are $3)!

In Memory of Penny Lane
Adopted: October 25, 2013 – Passed Away: November 4, 2016
Take a stroll down memory (er….Penny) lane with us…..Penny Lane had been evading the Crawford County dog warden for 3 weeks before she was finally picked up behind a Bob Evans. Once they finally caught her they tested her and found out that, not only was she extremely under weight, but she also had heartworm. With this diagnosis, she faced certain euthanasia. This is where Secondhand Mutts stepped in. They already had a foster home in mind: Steve and Michelle had fostered Rollo, another heartworm positive Secondhand Mutt and they were familiar with the recovery process. Penny was transported directly to Steve and Michelle’s home. OOnce she had reached a healthy weight, they took her to Gateway Animal Clinic for her Heartworm Treatment and she began her long journey towards recovery.
Heartworm treatment can be very hard on a dogs system and can even be deadly if the dog is not properly cared for post treatment. Like so many dogs that have to go through the heartworm treatment process, Penny Lane had some complications after her first round. She was very painful, she would often spike a fever and she even started coughing up blood. She made many trips to Gateway, where they did several x rays of her heart and lungs to make sure that she didn’t have blood clots and “dead heartworms” in the lungs. The doctors there changed around her medications and added some steroids to help her along the way and eventually she started feeling better. It was during her recovery from her first round of treatment that Michelle and Steve fell in love with her sweet nature. They couldn’t imagine adopting her out to anyone else and made the decision to make her part of their family.
After three months of strict supervision and rest and the diligent care she received from Michelle, Steve and the Doctors at Gateway Animal Clinic it was time to do Penny’s second heartworm treatment. She headed back to Gateway Animal Clinic and was dropped off in the morning. Michelle and Steve expected a call later in the afternoon telling them that the treatment had been completed, however, that’s not what happened.
Dr. Brian at Gateway Animal Clinic contacted Becca at Secondhand Mutts and told her that Penny’s heart was too weak to undergo another treatment and that they would like to schedule a meeting with Michelle, Steve and Becca to go over their findings. The three of them headed straight to the Vet to hear the news. Dr. Brian informed them that after her first treatment, her heart had endured a significant amount of damage and was enlarged to the point that he was no longer comfortable going through with her second treatment. He was concerned that another treatment would push her over the edge and kill her.
Dr. Brian explained to them that the best course of action would be to get Penny on Heart medications, antibiotics and Steroids to help her heart, and to continue with her monthly Heartworm PREVENTION as directed. The plan at this time is that we will recheck her heart again in 3 more months. If her heart has decreased in size, and if it is strong enough at that time to undergo treatment, then we will give her another round of heartworm treatment. If it is not, then we will depend on the “slow kill” method to deal with the remaining heartworms. Eventually the adult heartworms that are still in Penny’s heart will die off of old age (after about 2 years), and they won’t be able to reproduce because the heartworm Prevention kills BABY heartworms.
Until then, Steve and Michelle are keeping Penny quiet to give her heart as much rest as they can. Her favorite activities are laying on her mattress and chewing her bone. She always has a smile on her face and has even found a favorite spot on their couch. She seems genuinely thankful that her life has been saved, time and time again. She remained happy and comfortable in her new home, surrounded by love for the following three years. Sadly, on November 4, 2016 Penny’s heart gave out. She was home when she passed surrounded by her human family of 3 and her 2 canine brother and sisters who welcomed her so warmly three years prior.
“Heaven is a little bit brighter tonight cause our girl got her wings. Penny waited until we were home and she passed on her own with Steve and me by her side. Penny, Sweet P, Penny Prozac, you will be missed. You were loved so much, from the minute we laid eyes on you, you were our girl. And we didn’t even know it. You are the only dog I’ve ever had that fell off the couch once a week and you’ll be our dumb blonde forever. I know that your heart was just too big, literally and figuratively. I hope that heaven has real live chicken squeaky toys, and baby mattresses strewn about, and plenty of bones for crushing. Rest easy Sweet P. There’s no heartworm in heaven.”

The Barkfeast History
Eight years ago we saved the life of Scramble, a senior Doberman Pinscher who was thrown from a truck and taken to a shelter in Youngstown, Ohio. He was heart worm positive and needed a second chance on life. He found that at Secondhand Mutts when he met his angel and foster dad Bradley Lunder. Scramble spent months receiving medical treatment and was welcomed into Brad’s home until he passed on July 5, 2010. In his honor we celebrate his life and raise money and awareness for other heart worm positive dogs in our program.
The funds raised at our Pancake Barkfeast allow us to care for dogs we take in who test positive for heartworm. The Pancake Barkfeast is held to raise funds and awareness for the dogs in our program that are heart worm positive. It can cost up to $700 or more per dog to treat them for heart worm. In 2013 we treated 5 dogs that tested positive for heartworm, one who had serious complications and our expenses to treat these five dogs exceeded $7,000.
