Jackie

ADOPTED! December 30, 2015JackieSHM_body

Jackie was found as a stray one evening in mid-September on Tillman Avenue in the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood.  Lucky for him one of our volunteers was there with her dogs and she was able to take him in for the night until authorities could be called. He was very scared, darting and hiding between houses for days and it’s believed someone dumped him because he had been sighted throughout that day shaking and running aimlessly and searching the street.  He was reported as a found dog to the City of Cleveland Kennel and local police and no one had reported him missing. Follow up calls were made and he was scanned for a microchip but that also turned up no former owner or chip.

Jackie is estimated to be around 2 years old. He is a Jack Russel/Miniature Pinscher/Beagle mix (best guess!) and loves dogs and cats. He was successfully evaluated for our program at The Mutt Hutt daycare for dogs and is staying with the same volunteer who found him until he can find a home of his own.  Jackie will need a little bit of obedience and structure as any rescue dog does when they transition from being homeless to hitting the lottery of a great home. His foster mom is working on getting him fully house trained and having a lot of success and believes this will not be a problem for new owners. He is up to date on shots, heartworm negative, on preventatives and neutered.

Jackie is waiting for you to apply for him, get approved to adopt him and take him home!

Foster Care Report:

JackieSHMJackie gets along incredibly well with my 11 cats and Buddy, my lab/pit mix dog.  In fact, he is particularly fond of one of my young male cats, who is also very affectionate, and they give each other baths and kisses!  He is sweet, loving and eager to please.  He sleeps through the night on my bed by my feet.  He is a good sleeper.  He thrives on routine.   He is smart and tries to imitate Buddy’s behaviors (for example, rolling around on his back in the grass) which is fun to watch.

He is young and I have been working with him on his manners (teaching him not to jump and he is a bit of a nipper).  He just gets so excited to see me when I come home.  When provided with a regular routine, Jackie is pretty well housebroken, but still has an accident from time to time on his piddle pads.  However, if let outside on a regular schedule he does both his business pretty much right away without necessarily needing to be walked in order to go, which makes it more convenient when I am short on time.  I always give him lots of praise when he goes potty outside.  I always make sure to let him go out right before bed and first thing when we get up in the morning, and that is helping with housebreaking.

Jackie is energetic and loves to run and play and be chased with his toys by Buddy or my cats.  He fetches and greatly enjoys his trips to the beach with Buddy.  Jackie is a joy to be around.  He does need a bit of training, but he learns very quickly.  He knows sit and stay pretty well.

Sometimes Jackie likes to explore the garbage and laundry basket, and sometimes he chews our clothes, which we have been working with him to try to distract him from that.  Other than that, he is a sweet little boy who would do well in a household with a family that is willing to spend a little time playing with him and allowing him plenty of time to play.  I think he might do better in a house with other dogs to keep him company.

We are not a traditional shelter, we are a cage-free facility. All dogs are temperament tested and must get along with other dogs to stay here. Appointments must be made in advance to meet our Secondhand Mutts. Please call 216-664-9660 or email rescue@secondhandmutts.org to set up a time. We prefer to adopt to local families but will consider long distance adoptions.
