Monty is a 2 year old Labrador Retriever. He and his brother are looking for homes and we hope to find them soon!

Wilson and Montgomery (Monty) are rescue transfers from Fido’s Companion. They were originally brought to Ohio on a rescue transport from Alabama to seek out homes. They were picked up together as strays and when they were not claimed they were transferred out to save them from euthanasia (common when there is a lack of space or funding for dogs in county or city shelters). Upon arrival it was discovered Wilson was heartworm positive. We would absolutely love for the brothers to be placed together if someone were open to adopting the pair but they do not need to be placed as they are doing well separated.

We are going The Extra Mile for Wilson. The overall cost to alleviate heartworms in one dog, including hospitalization, medications, x-rays, blood work and office visits office visits most often exceeds $700…for just one dog.

Wilson will be staying in a foster home until mid-August unless a low-activity applicant with a home that is a match for his adoption is found and we can transfer him into a home on a trial basis. He is a very happy go lucky dog who needs to learn his commands. He is eager to work for treats (what Labrador isn’t) and we anticipate he will love the water.

FOSTER HOME REPORT:

Monty kinda kept to himself most of the first night.  The next morning he wanted to play ball and kinda played with foster siblings a bit.  The third day he was out of his shell and ready to play.

He does have some basic obedience.  He jumped up on my counter I said No and he got down right away.  He also knows sit.  He wants to be near me when possible and I have stepped on him a few times while he stealthily hid behind me.  He loves playing ball (can get a bit excitable) and he can fit 4 toys in his mouth at once, He started growling a bit when the other dogs came near him with 4 toys in his mouth but when I gave a verbal correction it stopped. I don’t feel it is really a guarding issue at this time and more an excitement “I have a lot of toys life it great”.  When this happened I said NO and approached him took all the toys and let  the others look at them and grab one.  He had a shocked look on his face but grabbed another toy and continued playing. As I mentioned this happened 2 times and when corrected he stopped and gave no issues with the correction.

While eating I can stand next to him and he doesn’t care he wags his tail and just keeps on eating and happy as ever.  He is very respectful of his foster siblings when they eat he does not approach their bowls and if they do not finish and he goes near I tell him NO and he walks away.He does not like the crate at night at all.  I let him have a dog bed in my room next to my bed that he lays on or by the 3rd night he discovered the couches and slept there.

While I am gone he is in the crate and cries a bit than stops.Overall he is so happy and just wants to be played with and loved.  There are no major issues that ground rules and routines can not fix.  I think he would do well with a laid back pup or a family that is active he will need a lot of exercise playing ball or walks or a combination.  He also loves his down time of chilling in front of the screen door and napping. So far he has not barked unless crates.

He loves peanut butter with his meds and sits for them. Overall this week he did well.  If the girls are in the crate he is fine in the crate. He is all about equality.  He loves ball and just yesterday started running and playing with Hazel. He watches me to see what I am doing and he would rather sleep in the bathroom while I am getting ready  instead of play with pups. He wants to be in the room with you at all times and wants you to be with him out side.
