These two lucky ladies hit the dog lottery and landed a home together!

Sesame_Haven_hometogetherA dog is a dog is a dog…… at Secondhand Mutts we don’t discriminate by breed, we evaluate our dogs by temperament to insure they can be a part of our cage-free experience. A few weeks ago we met Haven and Sesame, two young, pit mix females that were at risk of being euthanized at the City of Cleveland Kennel. At the time we really only had room for one but after our two intake volunteers, Jon and Becca, met the girls they decided to pair them up for their

stay at our facility until they could find homes. Haven, the younger chocolate lab/terrier mix, pictured on the bottom of the photo was all smiles when we were greeted by her. Her wiggly bottom wouldn’t stop wiggling.

ng and her tail wouldn’t stop wagging. Then we met Sesame, a calmer, older version of Haven but a mix of Pointer and Terrier. Neither dog was spayed, they had both spent a couple of weeks at the kennel and started showing signs of a respiratory infection. We had the two meet in the kennel play yard, introduced them to our “tester dog” Crabcake and then determined they were a great fit for Secondhand Mutts.

Haven and Sesame spent the next week and a half in quarantine getting over their colds. Once feeling better we sent Sesame to the Meet-Our-Mutts in May adoption event at Pet People in Rocky River. One of our supporters and active volunteers, Melissa, had told a friend at work about Sesame and encouraged her to check her out at the store event. By mere chance we had one dog not show up for the event and our event coordinator, JJ, scrambled with Becca to get another dog to Rocky River. Becca suggested the only dog left to send that was available….Haven. One of our chaperones took off and headed back to our facility to get Haven and got her back to the store just before 2 pm. Close to the time when the event was ending Rob and Sue, the couple sent in via Melissa, took one look at Sesame, saw the instant connection Sesame had with Haven, and declared they wanted to foster both dogs!!!

Fast forward to now, the girls have recovered from their spays, they were reunited with Sue and Rob and the girls have been adopted…..together.

Thank you to the Hanna family, to Melissa for spreading the Secondhand Mutt love and to whomever dumped these precious girls on the streets of Cleveland. Bigger thanks to the many volunteers for the Cleveland Animal Control who have tirelessly worked to save over 1,000 pit bull or pitbull mixes in the last year. Your dedication is amazing and we are proud to be a part of your network.
