Xander is a new arrival found as a stray in Franklin County, Ohio. His owners did not come claim him and he was networked to local rescues and we stepped in to help him with the help of our constant and committed foster providers John and Charlotte (who are also experienced Doberman owners). Xander is a young and typically active Doberman who is now being observed by John and Charlotte, meeting their dogs and being introduced to basic commands and proper introductions to both animals and humans. While in their care he will be crate trained. He is up to date on his vaccines, microchipped and will be filling out in size. Dobermans grow during their first two and half years and Xander could be estimated to be at around 80 pounds when he is full grown.

Xander has been diagnosed at a young age with heartworm disease and will be receiving treatments through the funding of The Extra Mile program. Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal disease in pets in the United States and many other parts of the world. It is caused by foot-long worms (heartworms) that live in the heart, lungs and associated blood vessels of affected pets, causing severe lung disease, heart failure and damage to other organs in the body. Xander will be treated for heartworms while in foster care unless another suitable adoptive home is selected for him to move into. He will be neutered after his heartworm treatments.

To help us help Xander and other dogs we care for please consider making a donation to The Extra Mile Fund. Every dollar donated is allocated to the expenses associated  with this program.

Foster Provider Dog Report
Foster Provider Report Provided by John
Xander is approximately  1 1/2 yrs old. He would do best with a dog companion, someone to keep him entertained as he is very playful and energetic.  He loves to chew on toys (nylabones and kongs). He is super affectionate and loves to be close to people he knows and trust. Xander is not good with strangers and he has snapped out of fear. He is going to need time to adjust and warm up to new people and that will require patience from his future owner.

Xander is most likely not going to be a dog that is going to very outgoing and social. He does best in a familiar environment with people and other dogs he trusts. A calm home with low traffic would be best. I have not had him with children, but I would avoid children with the trust issues he has.

Here with us, he is just a pleaser to be around. Xander is just a happy playful pup and you would never know he has any fear issues.  He walks perfectly on a leash with no pulling. He has a very slow steady heel. Xander loves to go for walks, just as long as you keep a distance from strangers.  If he is going to be in a area with a lot of people or children around playing, he does tolerate a basket muzzle for safety.

Xander would do great if he had a fence to romp and play, but would do fine with a play mate in the home. Not sure if he would do well with a cat, he is a bit timid around the rabbits at Rural King when we take him there. He had also seen a mouse on one of those visits, and he was totally petrified. He is very nervous in the car and will drool heavily, and may also vomit but does well if given Dramamin before going.

Xander is very good in the house and will go to the door when he needs to go outside. We have had no issues with chewing things he is not supposed to. He is no fan of his crate thought he will go in to eat but when he is done, he wants out and will let you know it. He has no food issues and eats nicely. He will even share his food with the other dogs.

Xander will do well with some obedience training or  even classes just as long as done so with some caution. He would benefit from the socialization. Overall he really is a great dog. Yes he has some querks but don’t we all! Xander just needs a special owner that is willing to work around his issues. Positive reinforcement and patience is the key to this boy. He is just about ready to start heartworm treatment and will need a calm low activity home to heal and get better.

Greta

Arrival Date: 2/1/2021
Breed/Mix: Doberman
Gender: Female
Age: 9-10 years
Size: 104 pounds (currently on a weight loss plan)
Altered: Yes
Location: In Foster Provider Home
Vaccinations: Up to Date
Microchipped: Yes
Personality: Calm, Affectionate
Dog Social: Yes
Crate Trained: Yes but not necessary
House Trained: Yes
Kid Friendly: Unknown
Cat Friendly: NO CATS!
Intake Origin: Owner Surrender
Adoption Fee: $250

Greta is a loving senior female Doberman. She arrived into our program at the beginning of February after her former owners were moved into an assisted living home and unfortunately could no longer care for her. She was moved immediately into a foster provider home and is currently living with other dogs. Greta is dog social but does exhibit prey drive and should not live in a home with cats or other small animals.

Greta is a very loving and affectionate dog. She enjoys lounging around with her foster providers and has a calm temperament.

Greta is on a daily medication to treat bladder leakage. She has not had any incidents since starting the medication years ago. Greta also has mild alopecia which causes her hair to thin on her back. She arrived to us overweight and is currently on a weight loss plan to get her to a healthy weight. Overall Greta is in good health and ready to find a loving forever home.

Greta is up to date on vaccines, microchipped and spayed. For more information about her personality please read the foster report below.

Foster Provider Dog Report

Greta is an older girl, but you wouldn’t really know it by the way she acts. She runs and plays with the other dogs in our home, up and down the stairs like they’re nothing. She is very obedient, knows her downs, sits and does stay very nicely. She also walks well on a leash and rides nice in a car.

Greta is totally house broken and has had zero accidents since arriving in our home. She will go to the door when she needs to potty. Greta loves to hang out with her humans and needs to be close most of the time. She will sleep in bed with you if invited but she does sleep in a dog bed if that is preferred.

Greta loves to eat which you can tell that by her weight (she is a bit overweight) and we’re working on that. We feel we have had some success getting her weight down thus far. People food is her big addiction and gobbling down her food. She has been eating kibble only and using a slow feeder bowl and it does slow her down a bit. She is not a fan of the crate but she goes in there to eat her food and then she wants out right away. Really she would most likely do just fine free in the home. Also she does not like small animals (like cats) so she would not do well with small animals in the home. She would (and does) do well with a comparable sized dog.

She seems to have no real health issues except for her weight and a few lumps and bumps that the vet has tested and are just fatty growths.

Overall we love having Greta around. She is such a nice girl and she is going to make someone very happy!

Dex is a 2 year old male lab mix. He was surrendered into our program mid February after his former owners could no longer care for him. Dex was moved immediately into a foster provider home where he is currently living with another adult dog and cats.

Dex is an affectionate, happy go lucky boy. He is social with other dogs and gets along well with cats. Though he has not been officially tested around children, it is assumed he would behave well given his temperament. He is crate and house trained.

Dex is up to date on his shots, microchipped and neutered. For more information about Dex, please read his foster report below.

So far, everything has been great with Dex.

He is a very sweet boy; he always wants to be right by us and get lots of pets and belly rubs. Overall his temperament is pretty mild – he doesn’t bark very much and he is fine just laying around most of the day. He does have a puppy energy and gets excited and loves to play. He has done really well with our dog as far as being comfortable, playing, sharing toys, etc.

He’s a good walker (calm, doesn’t pull) and does well on his harness. We walked about 2.5 miles in the snow yesterday and he did just fine. He really likes the snow and rolling around in it in the backyard.

He had one accident, but so far has been good about waiting until he’s outside.

Dex has been exposed to our cats. I think he would do just fine in a home with cats (or other dogs). He was able to lay on the couch with us and was totally unfazed when the cat came to lay with me. They’re roaming freely around the house and he isn’t showing any interest in them.

Additionally, he’s shown nothing but great behavior and is starting to be a little more independent.

Mindy is a sweet 3 year old female yorkie mix. She came to us after being dumped at Gateway Animal Clinic one cold night in November. Mindy quickly moved into a foster home where she lives with two other small dogs. Mindy is a spunky, affectionate little ball of energy.

Mindy is up to date on vaccines, microchipped and scheduled to be spayed. Please review her foster report to learn more about her.

Foster Provider Dog Report

Mindy is a gem!  She is so sweet, funny, and playful.  She loves attention and belly rubs.  She is quite the princess diva and she knows it.  She is not a fear biter nor a fear potty little dog.  She is quite confident.  She gets along with our two Chihuahuas.  We were told that she is around 3, yet I think she may be younger.  Her teeth look great and she has almost puppy-like energy.  She loves food and treats and is motivated by both.  She has gone potty outside but is really good with pee pads.  She had just a few small accidents but if you catch her and tell her no she stops and then you can redirect her to outside or pee pads.  She takes redirection really well.  She likes to play bite or chew (both playful and not hard) on things but what we have done is tell her “no bite” and then give her a chew toy or greenie and she will focus her attention on that.  She usually only barks when the doorbell rings or she hears knocking (even on tv).  We would just say “Shhh” and she stops.  I have been brushing her daily and using eye wipes to clear her eyes.  She likes it.

All in all, she is a fantastic dog that is going to make a wonderful pet for someone.  We will miss her.

Buddy is a 3 year old male lab mix. Buddy came to Secondhand Mutts via owner surrender after his former owner became too ill to care for him. Buddy moved immediately into a foster home where he is living with two adult terriers and his foster mom. Buddy spent much of his time alone before coming to Secondhand Mutts but is adjusting well to cohabitating with other dogs. He has a lot of energy but also knows how to relax when it is time. Buddy is up to date on his shots, neutered, microchipped and ready to find a forever home. Please see his foster report below for more details.

Foster Provider Dog Report

Buddy is a handsome happy-go-lucky 3 year old lab mix who was an owner surrender due to illness. He was being cared for by concerned neighbors and spent a lot of time alone lately. He’s been living at my house since November 24th.

Buddy is very smart, friendly, and playful. He knows a few basic commands like “sit”, “no”, and “lay down”. He is pretty much house trained but I’m home a lot so I’m not sure how he would do if he was by himself for hours. I confine him in the kitchen rather than crating him when I’m out, which has worked out fine. Compared to my dogs, he doesn’t bark much but he does make a lot of funny sound effects. He is a pretty good watchdog. He likes going for walks so we do about 2 miles a day. He’s okay on a leash but will try to chase wildlife; he shows interest in people and other dogs who are out but does not strongly react to them. He rides well in the car and he usually sleeps through the night without needing to go out.

Buddy gets along with my two terriers and is learning to respect other dogs’ boundaries. We work on that constantly and he is much better.  He can get overly excited and hyperactive when he plays, which can be somewhat overwhelming for smaller dogs. He will gently jump up on people when he wants to be petted or hugged; working on that too.  He would love a fenced yard where he can run free and expend energy but, as long as he gets enough activity, it’s not a requirement. Buddy can sometimes be possessive about his food and will verbalize a  warning growl at my dogs if they get too close to his bowl. There have never been any major conflicts, just minor disagreements. He also wants to be the center of attention and gets jealous if he’s not. A lot of this is because he’s never lived with other dogs before and is learning how to socialize. I see improvement every day but he will still need more basic training in his forever home.

Buddy is a great guy and would be a fun companion for an active person who will play with him and keep him busy. He’s also a couch potato/lap dog who loves to hang out and watch TV once he’s done running around. He’s a real sweetheart who would make a great “buddy” for just about anyone.

Neyo is a well behaved, laid back 6 year old Doberman. He came to us via rescue transfer from Lorain County. Neyo immediately moved into a foster home where he is now living with his foster humans and their adult low energy dobermans.

Neyo has a blood clotting disorder called Von Willebrand’s disease. It is caused by a deficiency in the amount of a specific protein needed to help platelets stick together and form clots to seal broken blood vessels. At least thirty different breeds are affected, but the Doberman Pinscher is the breed with the highest incidence of Von Willebrand’s disease. Although Dobermans are commonly affected, they usually have the mildest form of the disease.

Owners of affected dogs should use caution in situations where excessive roughhousing is observed, such as at home with siblings, dog parks or dog daycare (where fights may occur) or activities were injury (such as taking a spill during an agility competition) are more likely to happen. Because of his diagnosis, Neyo needs to be the only dog in his future forever home to reduce risk of injury.

Neyo is up to date on vaccines, microchipped and neutered. Please review his foster report to learn more about him.

Typically our dogs stay in a foster home where we can learn as much about them as possible to assist with our efforts for making the best match with a new home. The adjustment period for every dog is different while they are transitioning into a foster home as well as a forever home. Our foster providers send us their foster reports and the information received is updated on our website throughout the dogs time with us.
Our Foster Provider Program is an integral part of our mission to Respect the Dog. Without fosters, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do. We are always actively screening individuals and families to provide our dogs with a safe, structured, foster home to give each dog the time, love and respect they deserve while they are in search of landing their forever home. Foster Provider Dog Report

Neyo is such a great boy. He gets along with everyone. We estimate he is 6 or 7 years old, but he acts much younger! I couldn’t ask for a better foster dog. He has great house manners and has never had a problem with accidents or chewing. He is very laid back, but loves attention. He will be your shadow. He does very well in his crate just as long as he isn’t left in there for hours on end.

Neyo does like to eat and at a very high speed. He gulps his food so we have been using a slow feeder bowl which helps a lot with this issue. He is very intelligent. He knows to come when called, sit, lay down and does nicely on a leash. Neyo loves his toys and will carry them around with him. He is a little bit protective of toys though, but it is nothing serious. We have observed a little under his breath growl, but he stops when verbally corrected. He also rides well in a car.

Neyo sleeps in a dog bed at night, but will crawl into bed if invited. He likes to play with other dogs, but can be a bit selective as to whom he plays with. He would do well playing with a dog of the same energy level. He may also do well living with a dog experienced cat but has not been tested yet.

Neyo is all healed up from his neuter surgery, and ready for his new home. Anyone would be lucky to have him. I really can’t say enough good things about Neyo, he is just such a good boy.

Personality: Sweet, happy go lucky
Dog Social: Yes
Crate Trained: Yes
House Trained: Yes
Kid Friendly: Unknown
Cat Friendly: Unknown
Intake Origin: Rescue Transfer
Adoption Fee: $200

Ruth is a gentle hound dog mix, who was found and taken to an area animal shelter that did not have the funding to provide for her. They reached out to us and our volunteer transporters hopped in the car to make the 3-hour trip to insure she will get the take care she needs.

Ruth arrived with an injured rear leg. We scheduled her for a consultation with Dr. Reeves at MedVet Cleveland West. Her leg was assessed and it was determined that surgery was necessary. Ruth had a Lateral Suture Surgery on 10/20/2020 and will recover for the next 4-6 weeks in her foster provider’s home with very limited activity. After her initial recovery period, Ruth will start 4-6 weeks of physical therapy to ensure her leg is healing properly and she regains as much mobility as possible. Ruth may always have a limp and will likely develop arthritis in her knee but will have a good quality of life following the surgery.

Ruth is receiving financial assistance from The Extra Mile fund which is funded from direct public support. On the Mend sponsorship helps pay the often extreme cost to ‘fix’ a physically broken dog. We are lucky that we don’t see too many injuries but when an injured dog is welcomed into our program, there is a serious financial dedication on our end and we go in for the long haul, without hesitation.

$25: Average cost of two rounds of pain medications
$50: Average cost of one veterinary examination and first round of pain medications
$100: Average cost we paid for laceration repairs in 2014
$150: Average cots we paid for x-rays per injured dog in 2014
$250: Average amount paid in 2014 for a first treatment for an injured dog. Includes anesthetic and pain medications, fluids, injury repair and one night of hospitalization.

Foster Provider Dog Report

Ruth is a real gem!!  She is truly the sweetest dog. She settled in very quickly and is thriving. She loves people and loves to be around people. She loves to put her big head in your lap and loves attention. She also loves belly rubs, and her head and chin scratched. She has been around older adults and small children and does great with both.

She listens really well. She responds to sit and down. She loves being outside.  She happily explores the backyard smelling every blade of grass and wanders around looking and listening to nature. A few deer ran through my backyard and she was fascinated. Because she is a big dog she would do best in a home with a yard. However, I believe Ruth will be happy almost anywhere. She just seems so grateful to have a home with humans that love her, take care of her and give her attention.

Due to her injured left leg and her limp, I have only taken her on short walks AND she gets so excited when we take a walk. She looks around at everything like seeing the world for the very first time.  She does need some leash training. I am working with her but she will need additional training when she finds her forever home.

She does extremely well with my small dogs (they are under 20lbs). I am thinking with her personality she would do well with any dog but can’t say for sure how she would do with a dog her size as I have not personally observed her with any at this point.

Ruth had one accident the first day she came to my home but other than that she has been perfect with no additional accidents. It is like she knows that outside is for going potty. Every time she is let out in the backyard she goes potty.

I have a crate for her but have not used it. Due to COVID, 99% of the time someone is at home.  When I leave they tell me she cries for a couple of minutes and then settles down. I bought a bed for her and she goes right to it. When I say lay down, she goes to her bed and lays down. She sleeps in the bed all night and does not get up until I do.

Ruth started physical therapy in December and has been doing well. She had a minor setback after her second session but will continue to meet with the therapist for an additional 4-6 weeks.

Ruth is a great adoption option because of her personality. She is just pure sweetness and completely gentle.

Roman

Arrival Date: 8/19/2020
Breed/Mix: Newfoundland
Gender: Male
Age: 8 years
Size: 172 lb (Target weight 130-140 lbs)
Altered: Yes
Location: In Foster Provider Home
Vaccinations: Up to Date
Microchipped: Yes
Personality: See Foster Report for Details
Dog Social: Yes
Crate Trained: Yes but not necessary
House Trained: Yes
Kid Friendly: Yes
Cat Friendly: Yes
Intake Origin: Owner Surrender
Adoption Fee: $250

Roman is a senior Newfoundland. Roman arrived to us with his brother Marlowe mid August. Due to changes with their owner’s living situation, they were surrendered over to Secondhand Mutts to find new forever homes.

Roman and Marlowe moved into separate foster homes immediately after arrival so we could better assess their individual personalities. Roman is currently living in a home with six other dogs and doing well.

Roman arrived to us matted and severely overweight (a whopping 172 pounds!). His foster provider reported he could only stand for a few minutes at a time and was unable to take very short walks without stopping to lay down. Roman was started immediately on weight management food and taken to Gateway Animal Clinic to be assessed to ensure his excessive weight had not caused any serious medical concerns. During the examination, it was discovered that Roman’s hind legs were completely matted together which was likely playing a huge factor in his mobility issues.

Roman was scheduled for a grooming appointment that same day with the wonderful grooming staff at The Mutt Hutt, Bre and Stephanie, and with the help of Secondhand Mutt’s Operations Assistant, Kendra. The grooming session took several hours to shave off all the matted fur but Roman was a trooper through it all. A huge thank you to Bre, Kendra and Stephanie their hard work and to Emily at Gateway for loaning us a high powered pair of clippers!

After the grooming session, Roman’s personality started to shine through and his mobility immediately improved. He is getting stronger every day and starting to enjoy walks and playing fetch with his foster family. He is visibly more active and ready to find a forever home were he can be happy and continue his weight loss journey.

Roman is up to date on vaccines, microchipped and neutered. Please review his foster report to learn more about him.

Roman is doing great! He’s coming out of his shell, getting active – throwing tennis balls, chewing on bones. His tail wags when he sees us. Roman is starting to get vocal, in that he talks to us all the time. He has a very deep voice, but not loud.

Since his grooming, he walks much better and stands longer all the time without the back legs shaking, he even gets on the couch now. He does the typical newfie “lean” into his person and will paw you for pets and rubs.

He’s an overall sweet boy! House trained but will not go in a crate, though he doesn’t need to be crated, he gets into nothing. Also loves car rides.

Foster Provider Dog Report

Marlowe came to us through an owner surrender. He’s a senior yellow lab mix and is about 9 years old. He’s a very sweet guy and is even-tempered and low key (for the most part). He is overweight (130 pounds) and needs to lose about 40 pounds; he is now on a weight loss program and is getting several short walks a day. He has built up much more strength and stamina over the last few weeks.

On the plus side, Marlowe is friendly, playful, and affectionate. If he could crawl in your lap, he would (and has tried). He gets along with other dogs but would do best with a pal more his size. He walks relatively well on a leash and will occasionally react to other dogs, people, or wildlife. A strong “NO” will likely take care of it. Now that he’s more energetic and strong, I can see that he will need a little more work with leash training. He’s pretty good in the car, although he may want to ride shotgun instead of staying in back. He’s housetrained, sleeps through the night, and does not need to be crated. I’ve been confining him in my kitchen when I leave to keep him separate from my smaller dogs just to be safe. He was surrendered to Secondhand Mutts with another large dog, with whom he had lived for six years, so I was a little concerned that he would be affected by the change. From what I can tell, he’s adjusted just fine.

The negatives are few. He doesn’t bark often but does have occasional barking binges; not really sure what the triggers are, except for boredom or excitement. He drools off and on which is expected for his breed and size. He can be very stubborn and won’t budge if you want him to move or go out and he doesn’t want to. He does a little bit of food begging and, once he loses the weight, will probably be a counter surfer.

Marlowe is a really nice senior dog who would make a great companion for someone looking for a walking buddy and a couch companion. You won’t be disappointed. He’s a wonderful guy.
