ADOPTED! September 23, 2013

Riley is a one year old Puggle mix (Pug/Beagle) originally purchased from an Amish puppy mill. He was found stray in Old Brooklyn wearing a collar and tags. The person who found him took him home but then his owner claimed she didn’t want him anymore and told the person who found him to just keep him. So, they did. Riley is a lovable little guy, he needs to be neutered which we will do prior to his adoption. He is getting along great with the other dogs in daycare and he will make someone really happy. Despite his grumpy old man look, he’s a really happy-go-lucky boy who is eager to please. RileyPuppyEyes

Riley stayed with the person who found him for a few days and reported back that he is housebroken and settled right in like he had lived there all along. We imagine he will find a home very fast given his laid back disposition, popular breed mix, and size. This is a complete report of what she had to say about Riley:

He is completely potty- trained.  He even went to the door to let me know he had to go by starring at me and doing a little “toe dance”.  He knows the word “potty” and runs in after he does his business to get a treat after.

He loves treats especially Pupperoni and does a “happy dance” on his back paws and turns around and around.  Too cute!

Riley walks nice on a leash and enjoys walks. Riley loves car rides and good in the car.  He is ALWAYS ready and willing to “go”.

He is not destructive in the house and is all-around a good, well-behaved and laid-back boy.  He really is a “Dream Dog”.  Very easy dog!

He is very playful and frisky…especially when you pretend to chase him.  He does laps around the yard and house.

The only issue I seen is that he has some anxiety..which is understandable with all the changes.   He cries and scratches at door when I leave.  I think it could be remedied by leaving for short periods and gradually increasing time away.  It might help if he had a doggy buddy to keep him company. He seems to enjoy other dogs.  I would recommend the new owner picking him up when they are able to spend a couple of days before leaving him for hours.

He is not interested and non-reactive to cats.

He knows sit, stay and come.

He is protective of the home and does bark when he hears noises or people/dogs pass by but stops soon after.  He is not an annoying barker.

He likes to sleep with you in bed

He is not overly affectionate and a little stingy with kisses but gives you loving looks with his big puppy eyes.

He loves frozen kongs (good to leave with him to help with separation anxiety), bully sticks and denta sticks.

We are not a traditional shelter, we are a cage-free facility. All dogs are temperament tested and must get along with other dogs to stay here. Appointments must be made in advance to meet our Secondhand Mutts. Please call 216-664-9660 or email rescue@secondhandmutts.org to set up a time. We are closed on Sundays. We prefer to adopt to local families but will consider long distance adoptions.
