Hunter

 ADOPTED! MARCH 17, 2014

HunterSHM_tongueMeet Hunter! He is about 2 years old, he is a Plotthound.  This boy was found running lose in Lorain County and taken to the local city animal control facility. He was picked up in mid-October, nobody claimed him, and due to space his time was running out to get out of the shelter without being adopted or rescued. He was showing signs of a hurt leg or paw, concern was raised because he hadn’t seen a vet and his face was all over Facebook being networked to find him a home. We worked with some of the volunteers at the LCC and were able to secure him a spot in our program.

FOSTER CARE REPORT:

Hunter is an incredibly happy boy, even through his surgery and recovery time, he would always greet you with a wagging tail and those wonderful, soulful hound eyes. Like your typical hound, Hunter loves walks with his nose along the ground and he will bey when he wants to point out something to you. Hunter is also very good in the car, loves belly rubs, peanut butter filled Kongs and being with people and other dogs.

HunterSHM_chaseHe is high energy and would do best in a home with a strong leader, preferably someone with previous hound experience. In true hound style, he eats everything he can get his mouth on, including anything that has been left out on the counter. We have been working with him to correct this behavior and he has shown improvement, but he does have some ways to go. He knows commands such as, sit, laydown, and Wait. He waits patiently before devouring his food, and he also waits until you tell him “Go Ahead” before going outside.

treadmillBecause Hunter seems to have energy to burn, we have started working with him on the treadmill. He currently walks at a fast pace for about 2 5 minutes and he does great! The treadmill forces him to focus and it tires him out both physically and mentally. He is very determined while on the treadmill and he caught on to treadmill training right away. It just goes to show how smart he is! I think he likes the treadmill because it gives him something to “work on” since he isn’t able to hunt, like his breed is normally expected to do. He would LOVE to have a fenced in yeard where he can run and play and would be a great companion for another active dog. He would also make a great running/or walking companion.

Hunter Stays in a Kennel when we are at work (8-10 hours a day) and does very well. He does bark some right when we leave but after time, he settles down. He does not chew furniture and he is completely housebroken. At night, he is perfectly happy curling up in the corner of the bed.

HunterSHM_sleepHunter is just an all around silly boy that’s sure to bring a smile to your face – and he’s ready for adoption!

When Hunter first arrived at our facility in early November he went to see Dr. Tim at Gateway Animal Clinic to get his updated vaccines and health exam. He has a mild ear infection and needs to be neutered. He is extremely under weight and will needs to gain about 15 pounds to be a healthy weight. The day he arrived is was 55 pounds. Hunter’s leg injury ended up being a torn ACL in his rear left knee. Dr. Tim operated on him and fixed his knee and then he should have a normal life as long as he remains a household family dog, not a hard working hunting dog as the breed is most commonly used for.  Hunter has had his ACL repaired and is doing great with his recovery. He loves exercising, and going on walks. He would really enjoy having a fenced in yard to play in. Dr. Tim did a great job and we expect a full recovery with no issues in the future.

The cost of the surgery and his other medical expenses was close to $1500. We are still accepting donations for his medical bill. Donations can be made through our website.

We are not a traditional shelter, we are a cage-free facility. All dogs are temperament tested and must get along with other dogs to stay here. Appointments must be made in advance to meet our Secondhand Mutts. Please call 216-664-9660 or email rescue@secondhandmutts.org to set up a time. We are closed on Sundays. We prefer to adopt to local families but will consider long distance adoptions.
