Nolan is a one year old energetic doberman. He joined Secondhand Mutts in mid-February as a rescue transfer from Cleveland Animal Care & Control. Nolan moved in with a foster provider right away and has settled in well. He has been exposed to multiple dogs, both male and female, and done very well. He also attends dog daycare weekly and we have received nothing but positive reports from the staff. Nolan’s foster provider has been working with him on his house manners and some basic commands. He is fully house trained and crate trained (minus some initial whining).
As a young, high energy dog, Nolan would do best with a family or owner with an active lifestyle or a home with another active dog to play with. We also think he would enjoy a fenced yard, though that is not a requirement for his adoption. Nolan would also benefit from formal training to improve his leash manners and basic obedience.

Typically our dogs stay in a foster home where we can learn as much about them as possible to assist with our efforts for making the best match with a new home. The adjustment period for every dog is different while they are transitioning into a foster home as well as a forever home. Our foster providers send us their foster reports and the information received is updated on our website throughout the dogs time with us.
Our Foster Provider Program is an integral part of our mission to Respect the Dog. Without fosters, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do. We are always actively screening individuals and families to provide our dogs with a safe, structured, foster home to give each dog the time, love and respect they deserve while they are in search of landing their forever home. Foster Provider Dog Report
Nolan is a super sweet dog, with a great attitude and he wants nothing but love and attention. He is a true dobie with the common trait of being a “velcro dog” meaning he wants to be everywhere you are. He has no hesitation towards other dogs or people. He loves to greet everyone and has never shown aggressive in any way. He also loves to cuddle! He will curl up and sleep in bed with you if allowed but he will also sleep in a dog bed if that is preferred by his new owner. Nolan also rides very well in the car.
He is quite young at only a year old, so he still has some learning to do. I have noticed he is a counter surfer so nothing should be left on tables or counters he could reach and consume. He is also a hard toy chewer so I would not recommend any soft or stuffed toys, as he will destroy them and try to eat the pieces. Given his age, I do think he would benefit from formal training lessons. So far, he knows sit and we’ve been using the word “enough” when he should stop something. He can be sensitive, but he is so eager to learn and please, that I think he would be very trainable. He also takes treats very gently.
He has a VERY high energy level so I would recommend that if he is homed with another dog, they should be of similar age or of similar energy level. I would also recommend an active family or active single owner. Nolan would make a great adventure dog with the amount of energy he has.
I have observed that he shares toys very nicely and I have seen no issues with food guarding. Nolan plays very well with all dogs and takes cues on what’s ok and what’s not. My female doberman, Della, definitely lets him know when she has had enough and he is respectful of that. He also did really well when I took him to dog daycare. Since he has been with me, he has had weekly visits to daycare. 
Nolan is house trained and will let you know when he needs to go out by circling a door. He walks moderately well on leash, but as I already mentioned, I think he could benefit from formal training and I think that his leash manners would also improve. Nolan will go to his crate for treats and feeding time. He is not a fan of being in the crate outside of those events so it usually takes 20-30 mins for him to calm down in the crate when I need to leave.
Overall he is a fantastic dog! He will make a great addition to someone’s family.
Meet-Our-Mutts
We are not open to the public. Our dogs are typically in foster homes. and therefore we ask that you not to come to our facility to meet dogs unless you have an appointment made in advance to do so.
Come to any one of our events featured on our events calendar page which are also posted on our Facebook event page. Event times and locations are subject to change.
We schedule in-store ‘Meet-Our-Mutt’ events twice a month held on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month. The dogs are chaperoned to the event by volunteers and we typically have the arrangements for which dogs will be on site a few days prior to the event date.
To inquire about which dogs will be at an event send our volunteer in-store events coordinator an email in advance.
Private introductions with a volunteer or the dogs foster provider are arranged after we have received an adoption application.
The Adoption Application Process
Our dogs are not placed on a first-come, first-serve basis. We carefully review the applications we receive and place our dogs in the home that best matches what is needed for each dog individually.
We are a 100% volunteer operation and ask for your patience while our volunteers process and respond to applications.

If you are interested in adopting any one of our dogs please fill out our online adoption application. Applications are responded to with an auto-response message indicating your application has been received. Please check your Spam folder as our mail sometimes does not make it into inboxes due to spam filters. We are a volunteer run operation and we ask for your patience while processing and responding to applications. Please notify your references when you list them on our application and give your listed veterinarian authorization to release your current or previous animals records to our volunteers. If you have never owned a pet before please research the breed you are interested in adopting to understand the needs of the breed and list the name of the veterinarian you plan to use if you do adopt.
