JackSHM_fieldWe are so lucky to have Jack in our adoptive family. Jack hit the lottery when it comes to being a Secondhand Mutt, but we feel the same way about him. This guy is a gem and will make any family who is lucky enough to adopt him be glad they did. Jack was found listed on Craiglist by his owners “Free to a good home”. Listed as a Doberman we contacted the family, they were in a rush to get him out of the house, so we sprung into action to get him. Big thanks to Dee and Greg at Comfort Kennels in Seville, Ohio for taking him on short notice and boarding him for a week until our Director was home to find him a foster home. Jack’s owners were able to provide us with a short history. They adopted him in April from the Cleveland Animal Protective League (Parma adoption center) and he was originally found in Garfield Heights as a stray, then transferred to the Cuyahoga County Kennel then taken in by the APL. This is a normal process for strays in our community to circulate and then land at a rescue shelter to find a home. We contacted the APL once we knew where he was adopted from to notify them he was back in the rescue community and we agreed to find him a home.

JackSHM_bodyJack spent his first two days at Comfort Kennel pretty stressed out which is normal behavior for a displaced dog in unknown surroundings. Over the next few days he was having a great time playing in the field at the property, eating, and loving the human attention he was getting. He did not take much interest in toys or his bed until we arrived to meet him. Once we drove down to get Jack and meet him we knew he was a special dog who just needed to find a family that could be properly matched up. He has very mild anxiety about being abandoned (i.e. leaving the house) but calms down after a few minutes. He shows higher anxiety in a crate so we do no recommend he stays in a crate when alone. He has been fostering with our Director and her dogs and cat and doing just great. He has free roam of the house, can play in the yard and is eating his meals.

Jack was exposed to children and we believe would do very well in a home with an active family looking for a dog who needs them. He would also do well as a second dog in a home. We are unsure if he will require a fence but we sure knows he’s enjoying being off-leash in an open yard for the time being.

If you would like to meet Jack please email us at rescue@secondhandmutts.org. Jack is 2.5 years old, up to date on shots, about 45 pounds with short hair that sheds very little. He knows sit, down, and shake. He will need a little work on counter surfing and toilet bowl drinking.

We are not a traditional shelter, we are a cage-free facility. All dogs are temperament tested and must get along with other dogs to stay here. Appointments must be made in advance to meet our Secondhand Mutts. Please call 216-664-9660 or email rescue@secondhandmutts.org to set up a time. We prefer to adopt to local families but will consider long distance adoptions.

Adoption Fee $200
