Lancelot

LancelotSHMADOPTED! January 20, 2015

Lancelot is a two year old Labrador Retriever. He was picked up as a stray in the city of Cleveland and taken to the Animal Control facility. His owner did not claim him so he was available for adoption or rescue transfer. Lancelot’s cage was clean when we arrived to evaluate him and when we took him outside he peed for about 5 minutes. All indications he is house trained. He was fully intact. When we got him back to our facility he was in obvious pain in his rear end — his scrotum was badly infected, possibly frostbit. It was raw and red and he was whining in pain. We immediately took him to Gateway Animal Clinic and to get him out of pain they performed a same day neuter and he spent the night. His foster dad picked him up the next morning to take him home to recover.

Lance’s first day was pretty painful and he stayed on pain medication through the weekend. He would not climb stairs and it would appear he didn’t really know what steps are. He also appeared to have never played with a dog before so his foster brother Bora (owned by his Dad who is fostering Lance) showed him the way. Lance is  very obedient and has enjoyed having a warm house to stay in. Lance has not yet played on the daycare floor with the pack but will be able to in the next week to start socializing with his new friends. Lance is up to date on shots and seeking a forever home.

Foster Home Report

Lance is a great dog. He is just now coming out of his shell after being on pain meds. He wants to play soooo bad now. He is an order of magnitude larger than his foster brother, so when he gets nervous during play, Scrote just backs off….he does not seem to have an aggressive bone in his body (with food/toys/dogs).

He appears to be housebroke, holds his pee until he is let out (does not seem to ask to go out though). The pain meds had him bound up, but he finally had a BM Sunday night, then held it through Monday for 9-10 hours and had a much easier time of it Monday evening.

He seems to intuitively know what is expected of him, so hard to tell exactly what commands he know. An “Eh!” get him to leave his sutures alone, and pointing and a “down” usually gets him to sit or lay.

He takes his meds like a champ, and gently “gnaws” the peanut butter and pill off your finger.

Have not roughhoused with him yet, but on a long lead he wants to wrestle with his foster brother outside. Inside he is pretty mellow.

We are not a traditional shelter, we are a cage-free facility. All dogs are temperament tested and must get along with other dogs to stay here. Appointments must be made in advance to meet our Secondhand Mutts. Please call 216-664-9660 or email rescue@secondhandmutts.org to set up a time. We prefer to adopt to local families but will consider long distance adoptions.

Adoption Fee $200
