Maia

MaiaSHM_bodyADOPTED! DECEMBER 27, 2013

It’s raining neglected Dobermans apparently……this is Maia. She is now in her 4th “home” here at Secondhand Mutts. She was surrendered by her most recent family due to hardships in the home and their other dog not getting along with Maia. She is the sweetest girl – she loves kids and loves human attention. She is 5 years old and we have her full history dating her back to her original breeder. She is registered with the AKC and microchipped. She loves to be on your lap….all 95 pounds of her! Maia’s owner has a very ill dog at home and no means to care for him along with the three other dogs he rescued. Maia’s sister does not get along with other dogs so they decided to give up the more adoptable dog and keep the aggressive one. We were unable to take both dogs in and have  strict no-aggression policy.

We evaluated Maia and she does get along with big dogs just fine. Maia moved into a temporary foster home that has a houseful of Dobermans and she fit right in with no issues at all with the dogs. She also met two cats and didn’t even bat an eyelash. Maia then moved into a foster home with 2 Labrador Retrievers and a Saint Bernard Mix and she is getting along well with those dogs too. She can easily be placed in a home with other dogs or be content being an only dog. She will be fine with children and cats. She craves human attention and will be under your feet or on your lap the minute you sit down. We will not lie, she loves to sleep in the bed with a person but could probably learn to sleep on the floor in her own bed.

Maia arrived with fur missing from her tail and will be taking antibiotics for those, we have already seen improvement. Maia has a mammary tumor, common with dogs who are spayed late in life. On December 6th Dr. Liz at Gateway Animal Clinic spayed and removed the tumor, and one breast that was filled up with dried up milk from over-breeding and neglect. We are anxiously awaiting the biopsy results. We had her chest x-ray’d prior to surgery to give us any indication of health problems and her radiographs looked normal. She received a full blood work up, those results are all normal and she does not have Von Willibrands disease. We are crossing our paws this is a benign tumor and she can live a full, healthy, happy life after surgery.

fosterhomeAlthough Maia is comfortable in her current foster home we are seeking a foster home where she can be a companion or solo dog in the house. Kids would be the best – she absolutely loves kids and kids love to keep dogs company. If you are interested in fostering Maia please email rescue@secondhandmutts.org
