We take in many Dobermans and have quite a few ready-to-adopt and approved Doberman applicants for many of them that arrive. Melons is currently being Mutt-Matched with one of those applicants and if they decide not to adopt we will make her adoption open to the public.

Melons was taken in from the Lorain County Kennel about a week ago. She was found as a stray with terrible sores/wounds on her front paws and rear quarters. She has the sweetest disposition and became a volunteer favorite at the shelter. We were alerted to her being there and made sure to arrive the day of her release to take her into our program. Melons is clearly a dog that was being used for breeding. She probably had a litter of pups in the last month. She is no longer going to be a money making dog for anyone, we are happy to report she is getting spayed in 3 weeks and on her way to finding a wonderful forever home.

We are treating her sores with a medicated spray and it could take months for those to heal. She is also hypothyroid and will be on medication for the rest of her life. Her coat is itchy and flaking but with a good diet and the medication she needs we expect her to have a beautiful coat in no time. Melons is also taking Proin for a common problem where she “leaks” at night.

Melons is a soft dog who just wants attention. She does like to be right by your side and follow her human companion everywhere. She is sneaky and although her foster parents take her outside to do her business she has proven she can sneak in an indoor poop when they aren’t looking. Of course, she will learn this is not appropriate in no time at all. Melons loves to destroy soft toys and pillows and she tends to be good at sharing.

We are not a traditional shelter, we are a cage-free facility. All dogs are temperament tested and must get along with other dogs to stay here. Appointments must be made in advance to meet our Secondhand Mutts. Please call 216-664-9660 or email rescue@secondhandmutts.org to set up a time. We prefer to adopt to local families but will consider long distance adoptions.

Adoption Fee $250
