Mocha

 ADOPTED! February 28, 2014

MochaSHM_faceMocha is a 7 year old Doberman Pinscher. She is red and rust with a docked tail and cropped ears. She was surrendered by her military owner who tried his best to maintain her but due to military obligations could no longer keep her. She was originally purchased from a pet store in Okanawa Japan 7 years ago as a puppy. He kept her for two years and raised her with his family and two young children. He was then stationed to return to the USA and was able to find her a home with friends in Japan and left her behind. Two years passed by while he was in the states when he received a phone call from a Florida animal control facility that they had his dog – they traced her through her microchip and located her owner. Not quite knowing how or when she arrived in the states and happy to have her back he drove to Florida and claimed her. She was 4 at the time. He and his family kept her for the next three years until the most recent transfer that was on military grounds and not permitting dogs. Sadly, he place her with family in the Cleveland area with the hopes they would keep her until he was able to settle in to a new long-term home. The family kept her for a short period but were unable to keep her (reason unknown) and reached out to her owner to find out if he could find her a rescue or new owner. We received the heartfelt email and knowing our love of the Doberman breed we stepped up to help. Our founder Becca even offered to foster her for a year or longer in the hopes she could be reunited with her family once they settled down again. Unable to know exactly what was in store for their own future they graciously declined citing they had faith Secondhand Mutts would be able to find her a great, long-lasting, forever home. A home she deserved to have in her senior years.

Mocha is a little overweight, she is probably close to 100 pounds and will be losing weight through diet and exercise while in our care. She just arrived so we are learning more about her minute by minute. She has gone onto our daycare floor with success and has met many dogs big and small with no problem. She does seem to exhibit some space and toy possession issues, but those are very correctable through command and positive reinforcement. She responds well to treats and knows how to sit, shake, lay down, stay and come. We do no recommend Mocha for a family with small children at this time. Once we can get her into a foster home and better understand her needs we will be able to further assess what is going to be the best long-term environment. Mocha is house trained and spayed. We prefer to adopt to someone with Doberman experience and someone willing to be patient with her quirks. Overall she is a very mellow dog, very loyal and protective.

Mocha is looking for a foster home. If you have Doberman experience please email rescue@secondhandmutts.org.

We are not a traditional shelter, we are a cage-free facility. All dogs are temperament tested and must get along with other dogs to stay here. Appointments must be made in advance to meet our Secondhand Mutts. Please call 216-664-9660 or email rescue@secondhandmutts.org to set up a time. We are closed on Sundays. We prefer to adopt to local families but will consider long distance adoptions.

Adoption Fee $250
