Sigmond

ADOPTED! March 23, 2016

SigSHM_body2
Sig_cacSigmond is a 1-2 year old long-haired Dachshund. His owner was admitted to a hospital and Sig was surrendered to the City of Cleveland Kennel. He was there for just over a week and was not doing well in the kennel (baring teeth and scared) and we took him in. He was scared but grateful to get out of the noisy kennel and be outside and in a lap. We can tell he was well cared for and we have moved him into a foster home to get to know him better. Sigmond is not recommended for a family with small children.

Sig is up to date on shots, microchipped and scheduled for his neuter (3/21/2016).

FOSTER HOME REPORT:

  • He is sweet and cuddly but he does have a lot of daschsund feistiness.
  • He growls on occasion as a warning he doesn’t like something but has not snapped at all.
  • He does do a puppy-ish chewing/nippy kind of thing (he will stop when I tell him to)
  • His biggest issue is his immediate reaction to strangers–male or female. He barks at them and need to learn some control with additional handler training. What I have found is the best thing for the person to do is ignore him until he decides the person is okay to approach. Some might find this behavior problematic or intimidating which is why I would recommend an experienced Dachshund person or at least someone who knows how to handle this type of behavior. Crating him would be an option but it wouldn’t change the behavior. I’ve kept him leashed and allowed him to slowly get used to someone else being here.
  • Housetraining is much better but not totally perfect yet. He still has the occasional “accident” in the house.
  • He’s transitioned pretty well to eating the dry food you provided.
  • I would think he’d do well with a dog more his size because he loves to play.
  • He’s caught on to a few stairs pretty well and he doesn’t mind being crated. I’ve also been confining him in the kitchen when I leave and that seems to be fine too.
  • I would not recommend that he be placed with a family that has small children. He doesn’t have the temperament for it.

We are not a traditional shelter, we are a cage-free facility. All dogs are temperament tested and must get along with other dogs to stay here. Appointments must be made in advance to meet our Secondhand Mutts. Please call 216-664-9660 or email rescue@secondhandmutts.org to set up a time. We are closed on Sundays.
