Toby

ADOPTED! MARCH 17, 2014

TobySHM_bodyToby’s story is a tragic one. We received a panicked email a few weeks ago from someone in Youngstown desperate to help a Doberman and German Shepherd. The dogs owner was on a ventilator and the family inheriting the home was not interested in keeping either dog, in fact, they threatened to take them to the “pound” to be euthanized. Neighbors went into action and one neighbor agreed to take in the German Shepherd. Doberman rescues in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Michigan were contacted but nobody seemed to have room. We received the email about a week later pleading for help. This week we received another email the owner had passed and Toby the Dobie’s time was up.

We were told and shown by a picture that Toby was chained to a chair in the house, the neighbors were feeding him but time was running out. They knew he was neutered in January and his owner took great care of her dogs. We do not have an explanation for why he was chained by her family when she went into the hospital. Toby’s neighbors rallied yet again, we rallied in Cleveland and one of our volunteers drove to Lima to meet another transporter along the way to get him to us. We are so thankful to everyone who helped get him to us. Toby_found

Toby is a bit shell shocked, he doesn’t know how to climb steps and he’s a bit overwhelmed with all of the dogs. He is moving into a temporary foster home so he can relax and decompress with a bit more stability. He will be seeing Dr. Liz at Gateway Animal Clinic for a full health screening and vaccines. He is a very even tempered boy, he loves women (his former owner was female) and would be an excellent companion to anyone looking for a buddy. We will have a full foster home report in the coming weeks.

If you would like to foster Toby please email rescue@secondhandmutts.org

We are not a traditional shelter, we are a cage-free facility. All dogs are temperament tested and must get along with other dogs to stay here. Appointments must be made in advance to meet our Secondhand Mutts. Please call 216-664-9660 or email rescue@secondhandmutts.org to set up a time. We are closed on Sundays. We prefer to adopt to local families but will consider long distance adoptions.
