Dakota arrived to us from an overpopulated Tuscarwaus County Dog Shelter along with her dog siblings (no relation) Lady and Nico. Their owners surrendered three dogs to the shelter saying they could no longer care for the them. They stayed at the shelter for a few days and were networked to us and one of our volunteers made the drive (through a snow storm) to get them and bring them back to us. Dakota was clearly a breeding bitch given she has not been spayed and her nipples indicating a recent litter. Chances are she could no longer produce and was therefore unwanted.
Dakota’s nails were so long she had trouble walking, her coat was covered in open wounds from self infliction due to a very bad flea dermatitis. She was given a capstar immediately as well as a bath when she arrived and immediately was feeling relief. We were able to get her to our veterinary clinic for immediate care and started her on an antibiotic she is taking twice a day and will for awhile as she heals. We have started the processing of trimming her nails and her foster providers will continue to file them down as well while in their care.
Despite her skin condition she is just the sweetest dog ever. She likes toys and snuggling and being under blankets. We have her wearing a sweater to keep her from being cold and more importantly keep her from itching and bothering her back wounds. Dakota is reportedly good with cats although we have not tested her. She appears to be good with dogs but has not been around a full pack of dogs at this time. If you have a dog at home and want the two to meet we would arrange for a meeting with a volunteer to assist with dog introductions.
Dakota is now up to date on shots and spayed. She is house trained and does not need a crate as she is not destructive. She will need her new owners to understand taking care of a Doberman with a fawn coat. We recommend a non-topical flea preventative, a grain free diet, melatonin supplements as well as a fish or coconut oil supplement.
