Janice

JaniceSHM_marthaJanice is a 2 year old Grey Hound mix. She has beautiful markings, she is 48 pounds. She is brindle with a black mask, she arrived at the Lakewood Animal Shelter in mid-November after being picked up as a stray. She waited for her owners to come claim her but nobody did. She had some fear issues and we agreed to take her in to help her work through those. We are fairly confident had she ended up a another county or city facility she would have been euthanized. Working with several trainers in the area to get a few opinions on our issues we are now confident is is adoptable to the right home.

JaniceJanice gets along great with the other dogs in daycare. She is crate trained and house trained. She love to play ball, go for walks and is great in the car.

Janice’s story when she arrived…
Although we all know dogs can’t share their past experiences, it is our job as the ones placing her to identify her past problem, help find a resolution and help her work through it. We believe Janice was hit, perhaps in her crate, or punished in her crate. She has fear of quick movement or objects coming at her. We are working through these issues with short 5-minute exposures to different objects. She is being transferred to a foster home where she will learn the rules of being in a balanced household, with a balanced pack of dogs. We are very thankful to Anthony at The Mutt Hutt and her foster parents for helping us help Janice reduce her fear stress.

JaniceSHM_chair2Janice is up to date on shots, she is microchipped and spayed. She would do best in a home without small children, kids over 10 should be fine.  Another dog in the home would be fantastic but not a deal breaker.

FOSTER HOME REPORT:

JaniceSHM_foster2Janice has settled in nicely with her foster siblings.  She loves to chase them in the back fenced yard and she is very fast.  She is also protective of our home and will bark and growl at passers-by, the mailman, and the UPS man, but quiets when asked.

Janice is completely potty trained and knows, sit, down, and stay (sometimes).  She loves to be pet and touched and sometimes rubs against your legs like a cat.  She loves to snuggle up next to you in bed, but will also move over when told.  She does well when left alone for up to 8 hours (haven’t tested any longer but she’d probably be successful).  She does not chew or destroy anything in the house.

Janice has been introduced to a couple visitors in our home.  She needs time to warm to visitors.  She eventually warms to the point of rolling on her back for belly rubs, but she needs about 5 to 10 minutes of being ignored to get past initial growls and barks.  All in all, a 30 minute or longer visit can be quite fun for everyone.

We are not a traditional shelter, we are a cage-free facility. All dogs are temperament tested and must get along with other dogs to stay here. Appointments must be made in advance to meet our Secondhand Mutts. Please call 216-664-9660 or email rescue@secondhandmutts.org to set up a time. We are closed on Sundays. We prefer to adopt to local families but will consider long distance adoptions.

Adoption Fee: $200
