ADOPTED! September 12, 2014
Russell is a male, black, Labrador Retriever mix. He is about 18 months old, up to date on shots, preventatives and neutered. He was surrendered to a local vet clinic earlier this year and stayed at the vets office for about 2 months until a rescue stepped up. We adopted Russell out in March to a family who had applied and been approved to adopt one of our other black lab mixes and they recently returned him to us. Russell was living in a busy home with young children. He is happy to be back playing with his friends and would love to find a forever home. Russell is good with kids (although we recommend 8+), we do not know his history with cats and he is good with dogs. He could use some basic obedience so we are going to work with finding him a foster home where his foster parent can take him to weekly lessons to start that basic training at The Mutt Hutt Dog Training Center. Russel is not good with cats.
Foster Home Report
As for his ‘personality’ he eats just fine, seems to be totally potty trained, even going to the door a couple times which I hope was him indicated he needs out. He loves the toys and bones, entertaining himself quite well. He and my alpha male dog Toskey haven’t hit it off wonderful, but not bad either. They aren’t playing nearly as much as I’d like. Each time Russell initiates play, Toskey will interact for a while, then Russell must do something he doesn’t like, Toskey snarls and that’s the end of it. He doesn’t try and steal bones from Toskey. He’s been fine eating, no real interest in trying to get Toskey’s food, just curious but with correction he goes back to his bowl.
He has taken to my correction very well. He knows sit, which he must do for food, potty, treats, etc. We went on a nice walk yesterday. I kept him very close at my side which was needed as he would be all over the place given slack. He did a great pace next to my side. At the park, there are tennis courts that are fully fenced in (which is where I test all the dogs). He did really well playing fetch and bringing it back! He could have great potential to be an off-leash dog with proper training.
We are not a traditional shelter, we are a cage-free facility. All dogs are temperament tested and must get along with other dogs to stay here. Appointments must be made in advance to meet our Secondhand Mutts. Please call 216-664-9660 or email rescue@secondhandmutts.org to set up a time. We prefer to adopt to local families but will consider long distance adoptions.
