We at Secondhand Mutts never shy away from the hard cases. We respect the dog. We welcome dogs with everything from basic house training issues to mange cases, heartworm positive dogs to those sick and quarantined with pneumonia, dogs with broken legs and occasionally those who need focused and more intense behavior modification. We go The Extra Mile.

Teach Me The Way
Sponsorship of dogs whose behaviors leave a little bit to be desired or in need of polishing for placement into a forever home. We work with various local and skilled dog  trainers who offer our dogs fair and honest evaluations as well as training sessions for our potential adoptive families to ensure the training needs of the dog they are interested in can be adequately met and managed.

Sardine was picked up in Richland County (OH) as a stray. Her report shares she had been making herself cozy on various porches, was starving and apparently had no owner. She was taken to the animal control facility for shelter and care before being transferred with Gertrude to our facility for her continued care.

Clearly, Sardine has been neglected by whomever was supposedly her caretaker prior to being a stray. She clearly has a history of having an owner as she has shown us her ability to sit, stay, down and roll over! She is very responsive to treats and she will make an excellent dog for a positive reinforcement training program. Our protocol with a dog who has been starved as Sardine has is to decompress her in a quiet and safe environment which we are providing her for. She will transfer to an open no-dog foster home on December 1st.

Sardine is scheduled for her spay appointment and despite being neglected and starved she is on her way to a healthy recovery. We are feeding her small meals 3-4 times per day for weight gain and will taper her to a 2 meal a day plan when she moves into a foster home. She is up to date on shots and now has a microchip.

Sardine has exhibited a lack of exposure to dogs so we are taking our time with her to get her health on track before we continue with our plans to evaluate her social skills with other dogs. She has shown she is good with humans, she is not possessive of her food and she is not destructive when left alone (outside of a crate!). She has also shown us she is 100% house trained and she will let you know when she needs to go. Bonus for a rescue dog owner!

We are currently relying on our dedicated volunteers to give her walks outside of the facility. The crew at The Mutt Hutt is also providing her with one-on-one time play. She very much enjoys the affection she is receiving and playing ball.

We are going The Extra Mile for Sardine and will be providing training lessons for her adopter to assist with polishing he skills. At this time we do not know if she will be or ever be a candidate to play in groups with dogs or live with another dog. We are hopeful to make progress with her while she is in our care and in a foster home along with continued care when she is place in a trial home.

Sardine would do best in a home without young children.

FOSTER HOME REPORT:

Sardine is a beautiful, high-energy bundle of love and affection. She has been very well trained in some areas (potty, sit, down, roll over, shake, kennel up); less so in others (polite human/dog greetings, leash walks, socializing with other dogs). She’s so smart and eager to please though, that I’m sure she will respond very well to additional training in these areas.
We’ve had Sardine for almost 2 months and she’s a busy pup, but an absolute delight. Her vocalizations have been hysterical. She makes the funniest snorts and whines. She is an overwhelmingly cheerful gal, liking nothing better than to flop on your lap, roll over in your arms like a baby, and wait for the belly rubs. She likes giving kisses and snuggling up with anyone on a bed or a couch. She does sometimes get a little boisterous in her play, head-butting, mouthing and pawing at us. We are working on that though — and she understands and settles down at a stern “No!”
Sardine needs a good amount of exercise to keep her mischievous side tuckered out. She is a vigorous chewer -stuffed toys don’t last long, especially if they squeak- and needs very durable items to work on when she’s crated, but she’s (mostly) respectful of what is hers. No issues with shoes, rugs, furniture, etc., and she’s been fantastic with regard to her house training. Only one little accident when she first arrived. We do keep her crated when we aren’t home, but that’s mostly to keep her out of trouble when we can’t keep an eye on her. When we are home though, she has full run of the house and has been fine. Okay, she’s peeked up on the counters/tables a few times, but hasn’t stolen any food from them and, again, is quick to get down with a corrective “No!” She is pretty barky with people at the door or on the other side of our fence which can be a little intimidating. Once we bring guests in and she’s sniffed them over though, she’s been sweet as pie.
If you’ve got the time and inclination to keep her well-exercised, and the consistency to communicate your expectations to her, Sardine will make the perfect pet for you. She is a smart, loving, loyal dog.
